Skubal shines in first win with Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tarik Skubal struck out 11 batters to earn his first win with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Saturday night.

The left-hander, acquired from the Detroit Tigers earlier this month, allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He was sharp after a rocky first inning, retiring 20 of his final 23 batters, according to multiple reports.

"That's the guy that we needed," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "Completing seven innings, reset the bullpen, great outing. He's very physical, and you can see that when he needs to reach back for more, it's in there."

Skubal, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, was 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA in his first three starts for Los Angeles before Saturday's performance. He threw 106 pitches, the third-most he has thrown in a regular-season game, according to a report that highlighted his usage since joining the Dodgers.

The 30-year-old's night reached 100 mph in the final inning, striking out Jake Mangum on his final pitch. He recorded 23 swings and misses, per one report.

Skubal, who was born in Los Angeles, was dealt by the Tigers in a blockbuster trade on Aug. 1, with the team receiving prospects in return.

Offense picks up Skubal

The Pirates took a 3-0 lead in the first against Skubal, who gave up three consecutive hits, but the Dodgers (79-51) chipped away.

After tying the game with two runs in the fourth, Kyle Tucker's two-run single in the fifth scored Mookie Betts and Max Muncy to give Los Angeles a 4-3 lead. Tucker had been hitless in his previous 25 at-bats.

Tanner Scott earned his 19th save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Notes

Teoscar Hernández and Alek Thomas had RBI singles in the fourth inning. The Dodgers won their fifth consecutive game and improved to a major-league-best 37 comeback wins, per multiple reports.

Blake Snell was scheduled to start for Los Angeles in the series finale on Sunday. The Dodgers also announced that Andy Pages was placed on the injured list with a fractured hand, while Shohei Ohtani threw a live batting practice session before the game. Skubal said he has been studying the game plans of Snell and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and watched Ohtani's bullpen session prior to the game.
