A Political Switch Stirs a Family Dispute

When Shayan Masood, son-in-law of Congress MP Imran Masood, formally joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) on August 20, it marked a public break with his wife's family. Inducted by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow, Shayan soon questioned Imran Masood's political approach and argued that supporting Akhilesh Yadav was necessary to defeat the BJP, as reported by both India Today and NewsX.

But the political shift quickly escalated into a personal feud, aired publicly through a Facebook Live session on Saturday. Hamza Noman Masood, Imran Masood's nephew, accused Shayan and his father, Shadan Masood, of assaulting and verbally abusing Subiya, Imran's daughter, and throwing her out of the family home. The allegations were reported by India Today and NewsX, which noted that they have not been independently verified.

The Nephew's Allegations

During the Facebook Live, Hamza said the family had remained silent for nearly five years to protect relationships and reputation. He alleged that Subiya faced harassment because of political differences. "The family has tolerated several things silently for nearly five years because of relationships and respect," he said, as quoted by India Today.

Hamza further claimed that the family possessed recordings of private conversations and alleged incidents inside the house, warning that they could be made public if the dispute continued. He also said his family would take responsibility for Subiya and her infant, accusing Shayan of neglecting the child's basic needs. "Didn't even pay for the baby's diapers," he claimed, in a quote carried by NewsX.

In another serious allegation, Hamza said he had recordings of conversations that discussed "getting rid of" him and Imran Masood, as reported by India Today. He described his father being critically ill in hospital, with even political rivals calling to enquire about his health, while relatives were involved in political activities against the family, according to both sources.

Hamza said he was compelled to speak because of continuing statements against the family. "Subiya is not alone. The public will decide who deserves justice," he said, as quoted by India Today.

Shayan's Response

Shayan responded by objecting to private family matters being made public. He challenged Hamza to fight politically "in the field," saying, "If you want to fight a political battle, come into the field and fight. Private family matters should not be made public to escalate the dispute," as quoted by India Today. He said he had answers to several questions but did not want to expose personal family issues, adding that he was ready to respond if the discussion remained within the family.

NewsX described the dispute as having "taken a political turn," while India Today framed it as a "bitter family feud" that erupted after the party switch. Both outlets noted that the allegations have not been independently verified.

Shayan's move to the SP followed his departure from the Congress, the party of his wife's family.
