Selangor may declare holiday if it tops Sukma medal tally
The Selangor government will consider declaring an occasional holiday if the host contingent emerges as overall champions at the ongoing Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026, state Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said on Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference at the Selangor State Sports Council building, Najwan said the matter would only be announced after the medal tally is finalised, with the Selangor contingent looking well placed to end the Games on a high.
“We will propose the holiday to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari for his consideration. If we emerge overall champions, perhaps an incentive could be considered for the people of Selangor,” he said, adding that incentives for athletes who perform well would be worked on after SUKMA concludes.
As of 2.50pm on Sunday, Selangor had collected 85 gold medals, with the latest contributions coming from the women’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports team, women’s 3m springboard diving, women’s singles table tennis and men’s singles lawn bowls.
Najwan reminded athletes to remain focused with roughly a day and a half left before the competition ends. “Winning or losing is part and parcel of competition,” he said.
Menteri Besar denies viral poster
On Monday, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari denied the authenticity of a viral poster announcing a special public holiday to mark the state’s victory at the Games. In a post on Threads, Amirudin said any official announcement would be made during the SUKMA closing ceremony at Aneka Walk, Section 14, in Shah Alam.
“Any prior announcements or information circulating are fake and completely untrue. Please take note and remain patient,” he said.
The denial came a day after Najwan was reported as saying the state government would consider declaring a special public holiday if Selangor emerged as overall champion, with the decision to be announced only after the final medal tally had been confirmed. Selangor is currently in a strong position to secure the overall title.
