Husband Alleges Negligence in Wife's Death at Ridge Hospital

Daniel Ofori Asante has accused the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) and some members of its healthcare team of gross negligence following the death of his wife, Theresa Boakye Dua, after a Caesarean section. The allegations were made in a public statement on Friday, August 28, 2026, as preparations were underway for her burial.

According to reports from Graphic Online and Yen News, Asante said the couple had been married for 19 months and were expecting their first child when Theresa, a 31-year-old employee of the Ministry of Health, underwent a scheduled elective Caesarean section at the hospital. He said the family had placed their trust in the facility to safely deliver their baby, but the procedure ended in tragedy.

In his statement, Asante wrote: "Theresa's only fault was being pregnant and placing her trust in Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) for a scheduled, elective Caesarean section." He alleged that her death resulted from what he described as "blatant negligence and unprofessionalism," though he did not disclose the specific medical decisions or actions he believes led to her death. Yen News quoted him referring to allegations of "unprofessionalism, manipulation, and extortion."

Timeline of Events

Theresa died on July 16, 2026. Asante described the emotional toll of the loss, saying: "Since the evening of July 16, 2026, I have lived in excruciating pain. I am still struggling to process the horrific ordeal my wife, our families and myself endured at Ridge Hospital."

Yen News reported that Asante said he would pursue full transparency and provide more details after the funeral. Graphic Online noted that Theresa's father, who had been living outside Ghana, returned home early following her death; he was not expected to return until 2027.

Family and Community Impact

The death has left the family devastated. Asante highlighted the impact on their newborn son, writing: "Our baby boy has been robbed of the unconditional love of a devoted mother." He said Theresa had looked forward to raising her son and cherished the prospect of motherhood.

Asante also spoke about the effect on Theresa's parents. Graphic Online reported that she was employed at the Ministry of Health and was a member of the ICGC Covenant Temple. Yen News reported that Theresa was the only child of her parents. Asante wrote: "Every morning, I look at my mother-in-law and wonder how any mother survives the agony of losing her only child in the very act of bringing new life into this world."

He described the family's psychological trauma as "irreparable."

Official Response Pending

As of the reports, the hospital or health authorities had not yet given an official response to the allegations. Yen News also reported that a 61-year-old woman named Doris gave birth at the same hospital, though this was presented as separate information.

The couple had been married for 19 months, and Theresa's death occurred during what Asante said was her first childbirth experience.
