Sean McDermott, who was fired as head coach of the Buffalo Bills after the 2025 season, said Friday he expects the team to reach the Super Bowl this year. Appearing on "The Rich Eisen Show," McDermott said the Bills are a contender and predicted they will face the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl.
"With what they've done, the moves that Brandon Beane has made and the activity they've had on the roster just over the last X amount of months, I think has been very important," McDermott said, referring to the team's general manager. "So I think if you're betting on a Super Bowl contender, they're certainly one of them. I don't see why you wouldn't bet on them."
When asked by Eisen if he was predicting a Rams-Bills Super Bowl, McDermott replied, "It'll be Bills-Rams. It'd be a great Super Bowl."
McDermott also addressed whether he still roots for his former team. "People ask me all the time, 'Hey, do you still root for your old team?' And I said, 'Why wouldn't I?' Of course I do," he said. "The impact that that team, that building, and that community had on me and my family, we'll remember that for the rest of our lives."
The Bills fired McDermott two days after their overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round. He had coached the team for nine seasons, from 2017 through 2025, compiling a 98-50 regular-season record. Under his leadership, Buffalo reached the playoffs eight times and played in two AFC Championship games, though the team never appeared in a Super Bowl during his tenure.
McDermott is one of 10 coaches who left their positions after the 2025 season, and he has expressed a strong interest in returning to coaching.
New leadership and offseason moves
Joe Brady, the team's former offensive coordinator, was promoted to head coach following McDermott's departure. The Bills also made several significant roster moves in the offseason, trading for wide receiver DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears and signing safety CJ Gardner-Johnson and linebacker Bradley Chubb. Jim Leonhard has been hired as the new defensive coordinator.
Bookmakers have taken note of the Bills' potential, with the team tied with the Baltimore Ravens at +1000 odds to win the Super Bowl, trailing only the Rams at +500. The Super Bowl in question will be played in 2027 in the stadium that will host the big game.
