A possible signal deep underground

Scientists have reported a possible hint of dark matter during an experiment conducted about a mile (1.6 kilometres) underground in South Dakota, though they stopped short of claiming a discovery. The observation was made at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, built in a former gold mine in the Black Hills region, and was announced on Tuesday at a scientific conference in Japan and described in a study submitted to the journalPhysical Review Letters.

The interaction, which occurred between a xenon atom and another particle, produced a faint flash of ultraviolet light and caused a nuclear recoil — a signature consistent with what researchers expect from a hypothesized particle called a WIMP, short for "weakly interacting massive particle." WIMPs are among the proposed candidates for dark matter.

The hunt for dark matter

Dark matter is thought to make up most of the universe's matter. Ordinary matter — stars, planets, people and everything else visible — represents only about 15 per cent of all matter, according to the researchers. The rest is dark matter, which does not emit or reflect light, making it invisible to the human eye and to telescopes. Scientists infer its existence from its gravitational effects on galaxies and galaxy clusters.

The observation was made as part of the ongoing LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, which uses ten tonnes of liquid xenon inside a detector managed by the S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The experiment is designed to catch the extremely rare interactions between dark matter and ordinary matter, and is optimized to look for WIMPs.

Researchers search for dark matter scattering off xenon atoms. When a particle scatters, it produces flashes of light, and the properties of those flashes reveal what type of particle interacted with the xenon.

Cautious interpretation

Despite the intrigue, the team is careful not to overstate the finding. Lead author Sam Eriksen, a particle physicist at the University of Bristol in England, said the work "could be the first hint of a dark matter observation." But he added, in a statement reported by The Globe and Mail: "Importantly, as it's just a single event, we are not claiming that it is dark matter."

Co-author Alvine Kamaha echoed that caution, saying: "We may be looking at something extraordinary, but we have to be exceptionally rigorous before drawing that conclusion."

Researchers said the observation does not yet meet the statistical threshold needed to claim a discovery. The event was distinguished from background noise, but more data will be needed to confirm whether it truly signals dark matter.
