Paramount+ Premiere Date Announced
Paramount+ has set a streaming release date for Scary Movie 6, the latest entry in the horror parody franchise. The film, which opened in theaters in early June, will arrive on the platform on September 3, as reported by Variety and Screen Rant.
The streaming debut comes a month and a half after the movie's release on digital platforms, which included an extended cut, according to Screen Rant. A physical release will follow on September 22, with the film available on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD, featuring an alternate ending and several featurettes.
The Wayans Return
Scary Movie 6 marks the first installment since Scary Movie 2 to involve the Wayans family, who had parted ways with the series amid disputes with executive producer Bob Weinstein. Marlon, Shawn, Craig, and Keenan co-wrote the script with Rick Alvarez and served as producers, with Michael Tiddes directing.
The returning cast includes Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall. Faris and Hall reprise their roles after neither appeared in Scary Movie 5.
Marlon Wayans described the film as a "rebootquel" in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He attributed his return to the "dismantling of the Weinstein regime," God, and his father's encouragement. The film takes aim at cancel culture and safe spaces while referencing horror films such as Sinners and Get Out.
Box Office and Reception
Scary Movie 6 opened with $54 million at the domestic box office and finished with over $230 million globally, according to Variety. Screen Rant reports a total of $231 million, making it the second-highest-grossing film in the franchise.
The film holds a 24% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes but a 64% audience score, per Screen Rant. That compares to the franchise's other entries, which range from a low of 4% for Scary Movie 5 to a high of 52% for the original Scary Movie.
Audience scores across the series have been more forgiving, with the sixth installment's 64% topping the franchise, followed by Scary Movie 3 at 54% and Scary Movie 2 at 52%.
Franchise Box Office Totals
Across the series, the original Scary Movie (2000) grossed $278 million worldwide, according to Screen Rant. Scary Movie 2 took in $141 million, Scary Movie 3 earned $220.6 million, Scary Movie 4 brought in $178 million, and Scary Movie 5 grossed $78 million.
Streaming and Future Installments
All five previous Scary Movie films are now streaming on Paramount+ alongside the new installment, as noted by both Variety and Screen Rant.
Marlon Wayans has expressed openness to a sequel that would spoof the online horror phenomenon Backrooms and the film Obsession, according to Screen Rant. Whether the Wayans would return for another entry has not been confirmed.
