Samsung forecast to reclaim lead in global smartphone market in 2026

An industry report released Monday projects that Samsung Electronics will reclaim the top spot in the global smartphone market this year, overtaking U.S. rival Apple. According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung's smartphone shipments are expected to rise about 0.8 percent from a year earlier, while Apple's shipments are expected to decline 2.1 percent this year.

The report attributes Samsung's relatively strong performance to its broad product portfolio, geographically diversified business presence, in-house component sourcing capabilities, and robust carrier and distribution networks. These factors, the report says, have helped strengthen Samsung's competitiveness amid supply chain uncertainties.

Apple, in contrast, faces several headwinds. The company is dealing with potential price hikes for its upcoming iPhone 18 series, as well as changes in the launch schedules for individual models. Additionally, Apple is only expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone in the third quarter of this year. Initial shipments of that device are projected to be only a few million units, making it unlikely to significantly alter the overall smartphone shipment trends in 2026, according to the findings.
