New Collaboration Brings Churro Ice Cream Taco to Taco Bell

Taco Bell has introduced a new frozen dessert in collaboration with Oregon-based ice cream company Salt & Straw. The Churro Ice Cream Taco features a taco-shaped waffle cone filled with churro ice, finished with dark chocolate studded with puffed rice, and is priced at $3.99 for a limited time.

The new offering follows last year's Tacolate, a waffle cone taco shell filled with cinnamon ancho chili ice cream, chocolate, and toasted brown rice. That item sold out during its launch weekend and generated significant social media attention.

Tyler Malek, co-founder and head ice cream maker at Salt & Straw, expressed surprise at the Tacolate's reception. "We knew Tacolate was special, but the response completely blew us away – and our guests made it clear they wanted it to stick around," he said. "So when we had the chance to take the idea beyond our shops with Taco Bell, we wanted to dream up something completely new."

Unlike the Tacolate, which was only available at Salt & Straw locations, the Churro Ice Cream Taco is sold exclusively at Taco Bell restaurants nationwide.

Origins of the Treat

Malek's history with the dessert taco predates the Tacolate. He first served a version of the treat at Wiz Bang Bar, his Portland soft serve concept that operated from 2016 to 2020, where it was called "Chocolate Tacolates" and made by hand. After the Choco Taco was discontinued in 2022, Malek briefly brought the handmade Chocolate Tacolates back to Salt & Straw stores.

In February 2024, Malek and Taco Bell announced a collaboration on a new version officially called "the Tacolate." According to an interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive, Malek spent nearly two years traveling the world seeking help to realize his vision, ultimately designing new machinery with top ice cream equipment manufacturers. "We literally designed everything from scratch," he said, adding that the product is now made in Portland and that "this style of ice cream has never existed before."

The Tacolate launched in October, available only at Salt & Straw locations or through shipping, with two sweet sauce packets and a price around $7. Availability later expanded to select retailers. The new Churro Ice Cream Taco does not include the sauce packets.

Rewards Drop and Limited Availability

On September 8, Taco Bell Rewards members will have an opportunity to win a cooler containing three Churro Ice Cream Tacos through the chain's Tuesday Drop. Only 100 coolers are available.

The dessert harkens back to the Choco Taco, retired in 2022. In addition to the ice cream taco, the Live Más Café will offer a Salt & Straw Choco-Waffle Chiller milkshake with churro crumbles, waffle cone bits, and chocolate shell, available at select locations in California, Las Vegas, Houston, and Dallas.
