Gosling and Warner Bros. Developing New Flintstones Film

Ryan Gosling is teaming up with Warner Bros. to develop a new live-action Flintstones movie, as first reported by Deadline and subsequently covered by Malay Mail and Screen Rant. The project, which is still in its early stages, is expected to center on Bamm-Bamm Rubble, the adopted son of Barney and Betty Rubble, and will be produced by Gosling alongside his Open Invite partner Jessie Henderson. According to sources, the pair are currently meeting with writers to pen the script.

The film is said to be in the "early" stages of development, with plot details being kept under wraps. Screen Rant notes that should the project be greenlit, it would be one of the few Flintstones projects led by Bamm-Bamm in the franchise's 66-year history. The outlet also points out that a successful film would mark Gosling's first major reunion with Warner Bros. following the success of Greta Gerwig's Barbie.

The Flintstones Legacy

The Flintstones was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and first aired on ABC in 1960. The animated series followed the Flintstone and Rubble families in the prehistoric town of Bedrock, featuring Fred and Wilma Flintstone, their daughter Pebbles, pet dinosaur Dino, and neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble with their son Bamm-Bamm. The franchise has since expanded to include 13 different series and a variety of animated and live-action films, among other media.

The 1994 live-action film The Flintstones, starring John Goodman as Fred and Rick Moranis as Barney, was a commercial success, earning US$340 million worldwide. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer on the film. A 2000 prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, featured a new cast.

Previous Revival Attempts

Before this latest project, the franchise saw several revival attempts. In 2021, Fox announced an animated sequel series called Bedrock, with Elizabeth Banks attached to voice Pebbles. However, that project was later abandoned. Screen Rant also notes that Warner Bros. had previously worked on an animated Flintstones film with Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy, and Adam McKay in 2014.

Uncertain Future

Given the early stage of development, it remains to be seen whether Gosling's Flintstones movie will ultimately come to fruition. As Screen Rant observes, time will tell if the project gets off the ground. If it does, it would represent a significant addition to the Flintstones franchise and a potential highlight in Gosling's producing career.
