Overnight Drone Attack Hits Sumy Residential Building
A Russian drone strike on the city of Sumy during the night caused a fire in a two-story residential building, according to the head of the Sumy City Military Administration, Serhii Kryvosheienko. In a Telegram post at 1:42 am Kyiv time, Kryvosheienko wrote that a fire was recorded in a two-story residential building in the Kovpakivskyi district as a result of one of the strikes. He urged residents to stay in safe places, noting that the attack was ongoing.
Later, Kryvosheienko clarified that the massive drone attack on Sumy was targeting civilian infrastructure and the residential sector in the Kovpakivskyi district. He reported that fires had broken out at several locations and that the threat of repeated strikes was hindering rescue operations.
Two Injured, Emergency Response Hampered
Initially, Kryvosheienko stated that preliminarily, two people were injured as a result of the enemy UAV strike on the two-story building. This information was also carried by both outlets covering the event, with one quoting the official directly: "Preliminarily, two people were injured as a result of an enemy UAV hitting a two-story building," she wrote.
The fires at multiple locations and the ongoing threat of further drone attacks have complicated the work of emergency responders, according to Kryvosheienko's statements.
Context: Recent Russian Attacks on Sumy
The overnight drone strike is part of a pattern of attacks on Sumy and the surrounding region. On August 20, large-scale emergency power outages affected the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, along with water supply problems in Sumy region, with the cause attributed to emergency issues in the networks of the national power company Ukrenergo, as reported by one outlet.
Earlier in the week, on August 17, Russian units attacked Sumy, killing two people and injuring one more, with the attack hitting residential and non-residential premises. On August 11, Russian forces struck Sumy with four guided aerial bombs, resulting in the death of a man, damage to more than 20 private houses, and hits on civilian infrastructure.
Over the previous day, Russian forces launched nearly 60 attacks on 24 settlements in the Sumy region, according to a report from Ukrinform.
Air Force Reports Drone Activity
The Air Force had been reporting groups of drones, including jet-powered ones, heading in the direction of the Sumy region since the evening of August 20. The use of jet-powered drones has been noted as a recent tactic by Russian forces, as highlighted in one of the reports.
Both news outlets covering the event shared quotes from Kryvosheienko and emphasized the civilian impact of the strikes. The attack's targeting of residential areas has drawn attention, though the full extent of consequences, including the number of injuries, remained subject to clarification at the time of reporting.
