Russian officials reported that air defences intercepted and destroyed hundreds of Ukrainian drones in overnight attacks, with the latest tally reaching 419 on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), according to statements posted on the state-run Max platform and Telegram. The reports describe a continuing Ukrainian long-range drone campaign against Russian territory, including strikes near Moscow and other regions, amid Moscow's ongoing full-scale offensive in Ukraine.

Tuesday's drone intercepts

In a statement posted on the state-run Max platform, the Russian defence ministry said air defence systems "intercepted and destroyed 419 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles" around the country. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said earlier that air defence had shot down 61 "enemy drones" on the capital since Monday evening.

The governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, said drones had hit the village of Yevgoryevsk, south-west of Moscow, hitting a "private house." "Unfortunately, a six-month old baby died on the way to hospital," he wrote on Telegram. Two adults and another child were hospitalised, he added.

The reports do not mention any confirmed damage or additional casualties beyond the infant's death and the hospitalisations.

Earlier attacks

On Friday (June 26, 2026), the Russian defence ministry said air defences shot down 660 Ukrainian drones overnight, one of the highest figures since the start of the conflict. Drones were destroyed over more than a dozen regions, including the Russian capital and the annexed Crimean Peninsula, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov, according to the ministry.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 47 drones heading toward the capital were intercepted. "Emergency services specialists are working where the debris fell," he said on Telegram, without reporting any casualties or damage.

A "massive" drone attack also struck the Tula region, about 180 km (112 miles) south of Moscow, according to regional governor Dmitry Milyaev. He said a private residential house was damaged in a settlement in Shchekino district, and a woman was wounded.

Monday's events

Earlier, on Monday (June 22, 2026), Moscow shot down dozens of drones and briefly suspended flights at airports, local authorities said, days after Ukraine hit the Russian capital's oil refinery again. Nearly 60 drones headed for Moscow were downed, Mayor Sobyanin said on Telegram, without providing further details. He added that emergency services had been dispatched to areas where drones were downed.

The aviation watchdog said separately that the airports of Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovskiy near the capital had suspended flights, although flights were later resumed. In total, Russian defence systems downed 301 drones overnight, local newswires said, citing the Defence Ministry. That tally included Russia-occupied areas.

The attack came after drones again hit Moscow's sole oil refinery last week. In that strike, Moscow's defence systems shot down nearly 200 drones in one of the biggest air attacks on the city since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Russian strikes in Ukraine

In Ukraine, two people were killed and six injured in separate Russian attacks overnight, local authorities said. Russia hit the southern Odesa region with an Iskander ballistic missile on Sunday evening, killing one and injuring three people, regional governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram. Vehicles and fuel storage tanks caught fire after the strike hit an agricultural facility, he said.

In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, a woman was killed and three other people injured after a drone attack, Ivan Fedorov, the local governor, said on Telegram on Monday. A Russian drone attack also hit a Turkish dry cargo vessel, the Victress, which was sailing under the Panamanian flag, the Ukrainian navy said, adding there were no further details provided in the report.

Perspectives

The reports present two opposing narratives. Russian officials emphasize the scale and effectiveness of their air defences, describing the downing of hundreds of Ukrainian drones and the tragic civilian death in the Moscow region as a result of Kyiv's strikes. Ukrainian authorities, meanwhile, frame their drone campaign as a response to Russia's full-scale invasion, targeting energy infrastructure to deprive the Kremlin of revenue to fund its war effort. The reports do not provide independent confirmation of the numbers or the details of the attacks, and each side's claims are based on official statements from their respective governments.
