Rumer Willis, the eldest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, has opened up about undergoing genetic testing to assess her risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, citing her father's frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis and a family history of breast cancer.

In an interview with People published Tuesday, Willis, 38, said her family's experiences with dementia and breast cancer prompted her interest in taking an APOE genetic test, which can indicate a person's genetic risk for Alzheimer's. She has partnered with health testing company Function, which offers more than 160 laboratory tests, imaging and specialist assessments.

"It's terrifying to get answers sometimes," Willis told People, adding, "But I think when you have information, it's power."

In a separate video posted to Function's Instagram page on Aug. 24, Willis revealed her test results came back "pretty average," explaining, "It just means there is some risk, but it's not crazy." She also said breast cancer runs in her family.

Willis's comments come amid her father's ongoing health struggles. Bruce Willis, 71, was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, leading his family to announce he was stepping away from acting. In 2023, the family disclosed that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia, a progressive brain disorder.

In the People interview, Rumer Willis shared a rare update on her father, saying, "What's been interesting having a family member with dementia, it's like, he's happy. As well as someone could be doing, given the circumstances, he's doing well."

She added, "When I get to see him, he sees me and [daughter] Louetta and he starts smiling," and described "so much love and joy and tenderness that still exists there," calling it "a huge win."

Willis also expressed gratitude for the time she has with her father, noting, "I'm so grateful that I have a child that got to meet him because I don't know if my sisters will have that." She acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, saying, "I really miss my dad. I miss a different version of who he was," and added, "There are some days that are just so hard. I try to prioritize being present with where he's at now."

Bruce Willis's wife, Emma Heming Willis, recently addressed a common misconception about his condition, explaining that his form of FTD affects language rather than memory, contrary to what some might assume.

In May, Rumer Willis said on The Inside Edit podcast that her father was "OK in the context of what his reality is" and described a new "tenderness" in their relationship.

The actor made a rare public appearance at the wedding of his daughter Tallulah Willis to Justin Acee in Sun Valley, Idaho, where photographs showed him embracing his daughter. Demi Moore was also present.

Bruce Willis, best known for playing John McClane in the Die Hard films, also starred in Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, Armageddon, 12 Monkeys, and the television series Moonlighting. Rumer Willis appeared in Striptease as a child and has had roles in The House Bunny, Sorority Row, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She won the 20th season of Dancing with the Stars.

Bruce Willis was married to Demi Moore for 13 years, from 1987 to 2000, and they have three daughters: Rumer, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, 32. He has two daughters, Mabel Ray Willis, 14, and Evelyn Penn Willis, 12, with his second wife, Emma Heming Willis, whom he married in 2009.

Rumer Willis was awarded primary physical custody of her daughter Louetta in June following a dispute with her former partner Derek Richard Thomas, with the couple retaining joint legal custody.
