Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti announced on Sunday that a major road in the Duki district will be named after Dr Mahnoor Nasir, a 29-year-old doctor at Quetta's Civil Hospital who was seriously injured in an acid attack in June. The announcement, shared in a post on X, honours her "bravery, resilience and services as a medical professional," as reported by Dawn and The Nation.
The attack and its aftermath
Dr Nasir suffered severe burn injuries to her face, chest, legs and other parts of her body when a hospital employee allegedly threw acid on her in June. Police identified the attacker as Humayun Shah, who was said to have been killed in an encounter after law enforcers traced him as he attempted to flee on a bus.
The attack drew widespread condemnation from doctors, government officials and the courts. Following the incident, doctors in Quetta went on strike, demanding a thorough investigation. Days after the attack, the Supreme Court ruled that "vitriolage" (acid attack) was an offence more heinous than homicide, in a landmark judgment.
The chief minister's announcement
In his post on X, CM Bugti lauded Dr Nasir's "bravery, courage and sense of duty" and said that a road in Duki had been renamed after her. He maintained that Dr Nasir's determination was an "example for the daughters of Balochistan". "Recognising the services of brave and duty-bound citizens and encouraging them is our responsibility," he wrote.
The notification shared by CM Bugti stated that as a "token to public recognition of Dr Mahnoor Nasir, of her bravery, resilience and services as a medical professional, it has been decided to rename 'Haji Amanullah Masjid Road, adjacent to Damani Chowk, Duki' as 'Dr Mahnoor Nasar Road, Duki', with immediate effect."
