Scheduled Release and Background
Ripple is set to unlock 1 billion XRP from escrow on September 1, as part of its long-running monthly release program, according to reports from Finbold and Yahoo News New Zealand. The release places over $1 billion worth of tokens—roughly $1.3 billion at current prices—back under the company’s control, making it one of the largest recurring token releases in the crypto market.
The escrow mechanism was introduced in 2017, when Ripple locked 55 billion XRP into a series of time-locked contracts designed to provide transparency around token supply. Under the arrangement, up to 1 billion XRP becomes available on the first day of every month.
Blockchain tracker Whale Alert flagged three separate transactions on September 1: 500 million, 400 million, and 100 million XRP from Ripple's escrow system. The size and timing arrive as XRP shows signs of technical strength.
How the Escrow System Works
According to Ripple, it has operated a monthly escrow mechanism since 2017, locking up a significant portion of its XRP holdings to provide market transparency and prevent sudden large-scale selling. Each month, up to 1 billion XRP is released, and what Ripple does not use for operations, partnerships, or sales gets re-locked into new escrow contracts for future months.
The critical distinction is that an unlock does not equal a sale. Historical data cited by Yahoo News New Zealand indicates Ripple generally re-locks between 600 million and 600 million and 800 million XRP, resulting in a net addition of roughly 200 million to 400 million XRP to circulating supply. Finbold similarly reports that Ripple typically re-locks between 600 million and 800 million XRP, with a net addition of about 200 million to 400 million XRP.
During August's release, the company returned 700 million XRP to escrow, leaving a net increase of about 300 million tokens. XRP subsequently traded in line with broader crypto market trends rather than experiencing a prolonged selloff, according to Finbold.
Market Impact and Holdings
Analysts note that Ripple has maintained this pattern across multiple market cycles, limiting the amount of new XRP entering circulation. Historical data suggests monthly escrow releases have had limited price impact, as the schedule is known in advance and most tokens are typically returned to escrow. While events can trigger short-term volatility, they have not consistently led to sustained declines.
At the time of writing, about 31.28 billion XRP remained locked in Ripple's on-chain escrow, roughly 31.3% of the total 100 billion supply, according to data cited by Yahoo News New Zealand. Ripple's escrow holdings have fallen from 55 billion XRP in 2017 to roughly 38 billion XRP, per Finbold. On the weekly timeframe, the asset was lower by approximately 8%.
Technical and Investor Signals
Analyst Ali Martinez confirmed a technical breakout for XRP, as reported by Yahoo News New Zealand, adding to what the outlet described as a constructive technical setup. Yahoo News New Zealand also reported $105 million in weekly ETF inflows into XRP.
Separately, Australian lawyer Bill Morgan, while reviewing a registration statement filed with the S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the Cryptex Digital Market Cap ETF, noted that Ripple has indicated it could release additional XRP from escrow to support on-ledger liquidity for stablecoin and foreign exchange trading pairs if the CLARITY Act is passed.
