Roster Moves
The New York Giants released wide receiver and return specialist Braxton Berrios on Sunday, according to multiple reports, but his time away from the team was brief. By Monday, Berrios was back, signing with the Giants' practice squad as part of a plan that could see him play in the team's regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.
NBC Sports, citing Adam Schefter of ESPN, reported that the avenue for Berrios's return would be via the practice squad. The New York Post also reported the signing, noting it was expected and that the plan is to elevate him to the active roster for the Week 1 opener.
Roster Maneuvering and Veteran Status
Berrios's quick return was possible because he is a vested veteran, meaning he did not have to pass through waivers after being cut. As NBC Sports explained, a signing could take place right away because of this status.
The New York Post described the move as "legal roster manipulation," explaining that by cutting Berrios before the deadline to trim rosters to 53 players, the Giants were able to keep another player who might otherwise have been subject to waivers. The Post noted that the team made no waiver claims on Monday, despite holding the fifth position in the waiver order.
The Post also reported that the return was part of a "handshake agreement" made at the time of the release, with the understanding that the team would bring Berrios back.
Role and Options for Week 1
Berrios signed with the Giants earlier this offseason after Gunner Olszewski tore his Achilles this spring, according to NBC Sports. He is expected to serve as the team's punt returner and a depth receiving option, per the New York Post.
For Week 1, the Giants have two options, the New York Post reported. They can make Berrios one of their two game-day elevations from the practice squad, or they can make a corresponding move—such as moving someone to injured reserve or cutting another player—to fully promote him to the active roster. The Post also noted that players from the practice squad can only be elevated three times per season.
NBC Sports highlighted Berrios's return credentials, noting that he was an All-Pro returner for the Jets in 2021 and has career averages of 11.2 yards per punt return and 24.9 yards per kickoff return.
