Saints' Kamara out at least a month with MCL sprain

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara is expected to miss at least a month with a sprained MCL, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The injury occurred during Tuesday's joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys in Oxnard, California.

The Saints' season opener against the Lions is 25 days away, meaning Kamara is set to miss Week 1 for just the second time in his career. The Week 2 game at the Ravens is 32 days away, near the early end of the reported timeline.

Kamara, 31, is coming off a down season and was in line for a reduced role this fall after New Orleans signed Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year, $48 million deal in March. Kamara appeared in a career-low 11 games last year due to a knee injury, finishing with career lows in most major offensive categories, including 657 yards from scrimmage and just one touchdown. His 6 yards per carry and 0 yards per touch were also career worsts.

Contract and Roster Context

Kamara will play for the Saints in 2026 on a reworked contract that will pay him a base salary of $6 million this season, with a chance to make up to 5 million with incentives. He had been set to make up to 5 million in base salary before the Saints renegotiated his contract for salary cap purposes in early March. $3 million of that salary had become guaranteed last year.

In March, the Saints signed former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year deal worth more than $12 million per year in the first three years. The running back position has become expensive for the Saints, with $21 million in cap space devoted to the team's seven running backs—the most in the NFL before Kamara's revised deal.

Kamara's future with the team was a point of speculation before Etienne's signing. Head coach Kellen Moore declined on several occasions to indicate whether Kamara's contract would be reworked or if he would be with the team in 2026. Kamara ultimately agreed to a restructured deal, and said during OTAs he was excited to team up with Etienne, referencing his success playing with Mark Ingram and Latavius Murray earlier in his career.

Backfield Shuffle

With Kamara out, the Saints will likely turn to Kendre Miller and Devin Neal, among others, and could explore outside options. Both Miller and Neal returned to practice Tuesday after being out since early August with injuries. Audric Estime, who scored a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game, is still out with an ankle injury.

Kamara's injury is the second significant one for the Saints' offense this preseason. Rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, the No. 8 overall pick, will miss at least two months with a hamstring injury.

Running back has been one of the most contentious training camp battles for the Saints, with a stable of backs vying for limited spots. Coach Kellen Moore and company are looking to build off a 2025 season in which New Orleans won four of its final five games with Tyler Shough as the starter, but injuries are proving to be an early obstacle.
