Hirani Confirms Sequel Is in the Works

Director Rajkumar Hirani has confirmed that a sequel to his 2009 blockbuster3 Idiots is currently in development, with the original cast set to return. In an interview with ANI, Hirani said that the story is being written but that the project will only move forward if the script reaches a point that satisfies him and his team.

"Kahani likhi jaa rahi hai (Story is being written); we are still writing. Once it reaches the right point, then we will talk about it," Hirani said, adding, "Casting will be the same."

Story Follows Characters 20 Years Later

Hirani revealed that the idea for the sequel did not initially begin as a plan to revisit the 2009 film. He and his writing team were developing another story when they realized it could work as a continuation of the lives of the3 Idiots characters. "We were writing another story, and then it felt like the story we had written would fit into this second part," he explained.

The filmmaker also clarified that the potential sequel will not return to the characters' college days. Instead, it will explore what has happened in their lives two decades after the events of the original. "It's not about the students; it's about 20 years later ab kya hota hai unki life main (what happens in their lives 20 years later)," he said.

No Guarantee of Production

Despite the progress, Hirani stressed that the sequel is not officially locked and there is no guarantee it will ever be made. "We will only proceed if the writing comes together... We will make it only if it comes through properly; otherwise, we won't," he said. "This is a film which people have loved so much, and if we can't match it, then there's no point."

The director emphasized that he is in no hurry to rush the project, as the story comes first. He cited the example ofLage Raho Munna Bhai, the sequel toMunna Bhai MBBS, which was not initially conceived as a sequel. "At that time, sequels were not the big commercial proposition that they are today," Hirani said. He had been working on a different story about Mahatma Gandhi and non-violence when he felt the concept suited the characters fromMunna Bhai MBBS.

Cast and Background

The 2009 film3 Idiots featured Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in the lead roles, alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya. While Hirani has confirmed that the casting will be the same, he has not yet announced the full cast or detailed the characters' storylines. The filmmaker is also reportedly working on a third installment of theMunna Bhai series, though he has said that project will only materialize if the right script is found. "If there's a film that people have loved that much and we can't do it justice with a sequel, then there's no point," he said.
