A New Direction for Rainbow Six

Ubisoft revealed Rainbow Six Tactics during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, presenting a significant shift for the long-running shooter series. As reported by AltChar, the game is a single-player tactical experience with turn-based gameplay, moving away from the run-and-gun action of previous entries. The reveal trailer showcased operators fighting through destructible environments and coordinating attacks, with gameplay drawing comparisons to tactical strategy games like XCOM.

InvenGlobal added that the game is a tactical simulation set in the Rainbow Six universe, developed by Ubisoft Paris, the studio behind Mario + Rabbids, Star Wars Outlaws, and Rayman. The game is slated for release in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, following Rainbow Six Extraction (2022) and marking the first console Rainbow Six title since then.

Bridging Generations

A central goal of Rainbow Six Tactics, according to InvenGlobal, is to create a game that appeals to all generations of Rainbow Six fans. The development team explained that they wanted to naturally introduce Siege to older players who came from the original games and Vegas, while also bringing those classic titles to the current generation. The game aims to strike a balance between the classic entries and Siege, offering a single-player, narrative-driven experience with no in-game purchases or microtransactions, and avoiding a live-service model.

To reconnect with the franchise's history, players will command Siege Operators, while Paul Bishop, the protagonist of Rainbow Six Vegas, appears as the in-game commander. Ubisoft intends to re-establish the narrative connection with older titles that had been severed since Siege's release, as detailed by InvenGlobal.

Gameplay and Structure

Rainbow Six Tactics puts players in control of a squad of operators undertaking high-risk missions. Key features, as outlined by AltChar, include commanding a squad, fighting through destructible environments, planning attacks, and using tactical positioning. Players will level up operators and upgrade their headquarters between missions, unlocking new skills and equipment as they uncover a global conspiracy.

InvenGlobal provided additional details: missions include Hostage Rescue, Bomb Disposal, and VIP Capture, all set on the same map. The game features 15 Operators at launch, with more to unlock, and a drone phase for scouting before entry. There are 12 handcrafted maps set worldwide, including a Korean map, with no procedural generation.

Narrative and Setting

The game's narrative connects with Rainbow Six Siege, bridging Year 10 and Year 11. According to InvenGlobal, in Year 10, Team Rainbow disbands after an operation to eliminate Phobos of the Keres Legion, and Tactics depicts the process of their reformation. This narrative thread aims to provide a fresh feel while remaining familiar to longtime fans.

Release and Platforms

Rainbow Six Tactics is targeting a 2027 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The gameplay reveal at Gamescom featured operator Tzano, as noted by AltChar, giving players a first look at the tactical combat in action.
