First Double-Stack Long-Haul Train from JNPT Marks New Freight Milestone

Indian Railways has successfully run its first double-stack long-haul container train from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai to CONCOR’s Goods Cargo Terminal (GCT) at Varnama in Vadodara Division, according to reports from ANI, Moneycontrol, and The Times of India.

The train carried 360 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containers in a single movement, a first for long-haul operations from the port, as described in a Railways release quoted by Moneycontrol. The train departed from JNPT at 7 pm on August 21 and covered around 422 km, reaching its destination in Gujarat.

The Formation and Technical Details

The long-haul train was made up of two double-stack rakes, each carrying 45+1 loads, as per the Railways release cited by Moneycontrol. The leading rake was hauled by locomotive number 60311, with a tonnage of 1,847 tonnes, while the trailing rake, hauled by locomotive number 24690, had a tonnage of 2,105 tonnes. Together, the two rakes moved the 360 TEUs in a single journey, demonstrating Indian Railways' ability to handle larger volumes of containerised freight through long-haul operations, as Moneycontrol reported.

The Times of India also noted that the train was the first 1.3-km-long double-stack container train on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), with a length that matches the total length of the rakes and the cargo. The WDFC is a dedicated rail line built for faster freight movement, and the train operated on it, as The Times of India reported.

Minister Shares Video on Social Media

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the train on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, as reported by all three outlets. His post, quoted by The Times of India, stated: "First Long Haul (1.3 km) Double Stack container train on Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. JNP & Mumbai –> Vadodara, Gujarat."

The video showcased the full train traversing the corridor, with The Times of India framing the story as "Watch: Vaishnaw shares video" of the double-stack container train from JNPT to Varnama.

Expected Benefits to Freight Movement

Analysts and railway officials have said the operation is expected to speed up container evacuation from JNPT, allowing a larger volume of freight to be moved in a single train. As reported by ANI and Moneycontrol, this initiative could reduce the number of train movements required for the same cargo volume, easing congestion at terminals and improving utilisation of railway capacity.

Double-stack long-haul trains can also reduce the requirement for locomotives, container flat wagons and other rolling stock, according to the Railways' release quoted by Moneycontrol. Faster evacuation could help lower container dwell time at ports and terminals, while reducing overall freight transit time and transportation costs, as the Railways said to Moneycontrol.

The Times of India highlighted that the electrically hauled train supports Indian Railways' push for greener freight transport. By moving cargo that might otherwise require multiple trucks, such trains can also reduce dependence on diesel-powered road transport, road congestion and vehicular emissions.

While the specific benefits are expected, the Railways' statement, as reported by Moneycontrol, said the initiative is expected to enhance freight-carrying capacity and help reduce transportation costs.
