India's World Cup hopes dented by Dutch defeat

India's campaign at the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 suffered a significant setback on Saturday, August 22, when the team lost 3-1 to hosts Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of the second round at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen. The defeat, as reported by multiple outlets, left India facing a difficult task in their bid to qualify for the semi-finals, while the Netherlands secured their place in the last four.

The Netherlands took control of the contest with goals from Duco Telgenkamp, Tjep Hoedemakers and Thijs van Dam, while Harmanpreet Singh scored India's only goal. According to The Indian Express, Telgenkamp opened the scoring in the 41st minute after a loose ball from Tijmen Reyenga's reverse hit, Hoedemakers doubled the lead in the 51st minute, and van Dam sealed the win in the 56th minute after India lost possession. Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner in the 52nd minute to give India hope, but the Dutch quickly restored their two-goal advantage. The Times of India reported that Telgenkamp scored in the 41st minute, Hoedemakers in the 51st, and van Dam in the 56th, with Harmanpreet's goal coming from a penalty corner in the 52nd minute.

Despite enjoying more of the ball and creating more chances, India failed to convert their opportunities. The Indian Express noted that India had 61.6 percent possession, 20 circle entries to the Netherlands' 16, and seven penalty corners to four, yet none of it translated into enough goals. The Times of India reported 60.3 percent possession. Both accounts attributed the loss to India's inability to capitalise on chances and the Dutch's clinical, tactical display.

Semi-final lifeline and what India needs

The Netherlands' victory moved them to six points in the second round and guaranteed their semi-final berth. India, by contrast, remained without a point. However, according to The Indian Express, Argentina beat England 3-1 on the same day, handing India a lifeline: if India beat Argentina on Monday, August 24, and England lose to the Netherlands, India could still qualify for the semi-finals on goal difference. The Indian Express quoted India captain Harmanpreet Singh as saying, "Three quarters we played very well..." after the match, though the quote is cut off in reports.

NewsX reported that India's hopes of reaching the semi-finals now depend on other results as well as their victory over Argentina, with the team needing to win by a big margin. The Times of India described India's chances as hinging on "slim mathematical possibilities" and looking "improbable." India's coach Craig Fulton, quoted by The Times of India, said at half-time, "We have to take more of our opportunities, which will decide the game."

Star-studded attendance and ETPL crossover

The match also drew a notable crowd off the field. As reported by ANI and The Times of India, former Australia captain Steve Waugh and India cricket legend Rahul Dravid were among the attendees, alongside hockey greats Jamie Dwyer and Teun de Nooijer. Hockey India shared pictures on social media, posting on X: "A star-studded evening at the Wagener Stadium. Cricketing greats Steve Waugh and Rahul Dravid, alongside hockey legends Jamie Dwyer and Teun de Nooijer, are in attendance as the Indian Men's Team take on the Netherlands in Round 2 of the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium & Netherlands 2026."

The attendance was linked to the upcoming European T20 Premier League (ETPL), an ICC-sanctioned T20 franchise competition. According to multiple reports, including Bollywood Hungama and Deccan Chronicle, ETPL co-owner Abhishek Bachchan, Dublin Guardians co-owner Rahul Dravid, and Amsterdam Flames co-owners Steve Waugh and Jamie Dwyer were present at the venue. After the match, Bachchan met Harmanpreet Singh and the Indian hockey squad, extending his best wishes for the remainder of their World Cup campaign.

Bachchan, quoted in Bollywood Hungama and other reports, said: "It's my first time at the Hockey World Cup and it's not disappointed. Everything about the experience has just been fantastic. My congratulations to all the organisers, to the host countries for putting on such a wonderful show. I've always followed hockey a lot, but it's wonderful to see the flair that has come into the sport over the years. I really believe hockey is a very exciting sport."

The ETPL is set to begin its inaugural season on August 26, running until September 20. According to reports, the league features six city-based franchises and will be staged at two venues: Voorburg in the Netherlands and Malahide in Ireland. The opening match will see Rotterdam Dockers take on Amsterdam Flames in Voorburg on August 26.

Placement playoffs for Indian teams

Both the Indian men's and women's hockey teams were eliminated from semi-final contention in the second round, but both will play one more match to determine their final tournament positions. According to Times Now, the women's team finished third in Group E with two points, while the men's team finished fourth with zero points. The women will play in the 5th-6th place playoffs against either Spain or Germany on August 27 at the Wagener Stadium. The men will face Belgium in the 7th-8th place playoffs in Wavre, marking India's first match outside the Netherlands in the tournament. Times Now also reported that the women's team is assured of its best performance in 51 years, since a fourth-place finish in the inaugural 1974 edition.
