Hull City stun Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League opener

Hull City marked their return to the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, a result that delivered a shock to Michael Carrick's side on the opening weekend.

First-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy proved decisive. Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest to fire home the rebound after Oli McBurnie's close-range effort was tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Mendy doubled the lead in the 38th minute, heading in Regan Slater's whipped free-kick on his debut.

Hull, back in the top flight for the first time since 2017, were without 10 players due to injury but produced a vibrant display that left United chasing the game. The visitors dominated possession after the restart but created few clear chances; Bryan Mbeumo had a one-on-one saved by goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, and a late onslaught yielded nothing.

Carrick's side fail to fire

Manchester United, expected to challenge for the title after finishing third last season, struggled to find rhythm. Debutants Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos were anonymous in midfield and were both substituted off midway through the second half. Marcus Rashford came on at half-time for his first United appearance since December 2024, but could not revive the team.

Manager Michael Carrick had laughed off suggestions that United had an easy start to the season, and his caution proved prescient. He told TNT Sports after the match: "Two goals is frustrating anyway, they decide the game today and there’s things to improve on, one game doesn’t change the direction of everything. It doesn’t change the direction of the football club."

Captain Bruno Fernandes blamed two set-piece goals and the physicality of the hosts. "We know in the Premier League these types of away grounds are difficult to play against," he said. "You need to match their intensity and aggression. The two set pieces ended up costing us the game today."

Former England captain Alan Shearer, working as a BBC pundit, was blunt in his assessment: "Man United have been shocking, no hunger, they’ve been terrible."

Hull's historic day

Hull's return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence was sealed last season when they beat Middlesbrough in the playoff final with a 95th-minute winner from Oli McBurnie. Sergej Jakirovic guided the side to sixth in the Championship, and they became the first team to finish sixth and earn promotion via the playoffs since Blackpool in 2010.

McBurnie, who along with Joe Gelhardt scored 31 goals between them in the Championship, was a constant threat. Hull's squad has been bolstered by 11 new signings, including goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos for a club record £20m and defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano for an undisclosed club-record fee.

Hull owner Acun Ilicali said before the match: "I am living my dream here with these beautiful people." Jakirovic had insisted this week that Hull could prove doubters wrong after pundits wrote them off as relegation certainties.

Transfer news and injuries

Amad Diallo was missing from United's squad due to a small injury picked up at the end of last week. He was expected to start but was absent, with Carrick selecting an attack of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu. Amad had been in good form for Ivory Coast at the World Cup and returned to Carrington at the end of July.

United confirmed competitive debuts for Tielemans (signed for £35m) and Santos (signed for £50m from Chelsea). They have also agreed a deal with Brighton for midfielder Carlos Baleba; the Manchester Evening News reported that an initial offer of £60m plus £5m in add-ons was rejected, but an improved bid was accepted. Carrick refused to comment on the Baleba transfer after the match.

Benjamin Sesko, who missed pre-season with a shin injury, made a late cameo but was limited by fitness concerns. Carrick said his hands were tied regarding Sesko's minutes, noting he only returned to full training this week. United are reportedly seeking a left-back and a striker before the transfer window closes.

Looking ahead

United face Ipswich Town, another promoted team, at Old Trafford on August 30. Hull's next match is also against Ipswich, but the victory over United will have given Jakirovic's side confidence. Bookmakers still have Hull as 3/1 favourites to be relegated, but after this performance, they proved they can compete at this level.
