Arsenal's winning run continues
Arsenal held on to their perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on September 1, 2026. Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the match shortly before the hour mark, sealing three points for Mikel Arteta's side.
The win followed Arsenal's opening 3-0 victory over Coventry City and gave them a second consecutive clean sheet. According to Yardbarker, Arsenal have now taken six points from their opening two league fixtures without conceding a goal.
A tight contest at Villa Park
Aston Villa, who produced a much stronger performance than in their opening-day defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, made life difficult for Arsenal throughout the first half. The hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock when Emiliano Buendia struck the crossbar, while Ian Maatsen also went close for Villa. Arsenal controlled plenty of possession but struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half, as reported by both ANI and Yardbarker.
The match's key moments came in the second half. Arsenal were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute after Saka went down following a challenge from Maatsen, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review showed the foul had occurred outside the box. Five minutes later, Saka made the difference.
Substitutes play their part
Mikel Arteta introduced Eberechi Eze at the start of the second half, a change that helped add attacking threat. Eze found Riccardo Calafiori with an intelligent pass, and the Italian delivered a low cross into the area, which Saka bundled home to give Arsenal the lead.
There was further encouragement for Arteta from his bench. Eze played his part in the winning goal, while summer signings Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa were introduced during the second half for their Premier League debuts for Arsenal. According to Yardbarker, Konsa's appearance came against the club he left this summer.
Villa push late, defence holds
Kai Havertz had an opportunity to give Arsenal some breathing room but was denied by Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Villa pushed for an equaliser late on, but Arsenal's defence remained composed, with goalkeeper David Raya not required to make a single save for the hosts. Villa's best chance had already come and gone with Buendia's effort striking the woodwork.
Arteta described the win as "massive," according to Yardbarker. Arsenal's next match is against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.
