Israeli Police Seize Anti-Tank Missile and Weapons in Crackdown on Arab Sector Crime
Israeli security forces have intensified operations against illegal weapons and crime in Arab-Israeli communities, with a series of raids in recent weeks resulting in the seizure of a stolen military anti-tank rocket launcher, multiple firearms, and large quantities of ammunition.
Weapons Cache Found in Tel Sheva and Rahat
In a raid targeting a criminal dispute in Tel Sheva, officers from the Israel Police's Negev District discovered a vehicle containing a stolen IDF M72 LAW (Light Anti-tank Weapon), according to a report by Walla. The launcher was found alongside flammable materials, which were allegedly intended to obscure evidence after use. Bomb disposal experts examined the weapon and confirmed it was not armed or loaded. Authorities seized the LAW for further forensic examination, with initial investigations suspecting it was prepared for use in Bedouin clan and gang warfare in the Tel Sheva area.
Separately, officers from the Rahat Police Station, along with Border Police Southern National Guard, seized 12 crates of stolen IDF ammunition, an M16 rifle, magazines, and other accessories. Four suspects were arrested following that operation.
Raids in Northern Villages Yarka and Wadi Ara
In a Friday morning raid in the Druze village of Yarka in northern Israel, Border Police entered a residential building and found a weapons cache containing a Carlo submachine gun, ammunition for M16 rifles, Jericho pistols, and Kalashnikovs, as well as a long gun shoulder stock, gas grenade, and extensive rifle and pistol ammunition. A 22-year-old resident was arrested and taken to the local station for questioning, after which he was detained. Police indicated they would petition the court for an extension of his detention following a preliminary investigation.
The Yarka raid was part of a larger initiative by Israel Police to clamp down on crime among the Arab-Israeli population, as stated in the police report.
In a separate case, two brothers from Wadi Ara, aged 24 and 27, are suspected of possessing and carrying illegal weapons, which police say constitutes a threat to national security. The investigation, conducted alongside the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), uncovered photographic evidence showing the suspects with an M16 rifle, multiple handguns, and ammunition. Some of the images, released by police, depicted an infant propped on a sofa next to an M16 rifle, and another showing a rifle laid out on a Muslim prayer mat.
The brothers were detained early in the investigation and their detention was repeatedly extended. After the investigation concluded, a prosecutor's statement was filed, and the State Attorney's Office is expected to file an indictment in the near future, along with a request to extend their detention until the end of the legal process.
Similar Incident in April
The Wadi Ara arrests follow a similar incident in April, when two men from the Arab-Israeli town of Wadi Ara were arrested during a police raid on an apartment as part of an effort to crack down on illegal weapons and reduce Arab sector crime. In that case, the suspects were alleged to have thrown a gun and attempted to hide evidence.
