Man Charged with Manslaughter After Fatal Burglary in North London

A 46-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated burglary following the death of a 75-year-old woman in north London, police have said.

Jeffrey Dean Rose, of Apsley Close, North Harrow, is due to appear at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, according to the BBC. He was arrested on Friday, 21 August, the BBC reported.

Police were called to Tollington Park in Finsbury Park on the night of 11 August after reports of a burglary. Rose Smith was taken to hospital, where she died the following day. An 81-year-old man was also taken to hospital and was discharged the next day, the BBC said.

LBC reported that officers were called at around 9.20pm on August 11, and that an 81-year-old man was also taken to hospital following an assessment by paramedics but was discharged the next day. The BBC's report did not include the time of the call.

Rose Smith's family released a statement through the Metropolitan Police, describing her as a "truly wonderful, outgoing woman" who loved "bingo, going to cafés with her friends and, above all, spending time with her family." They said her death has been "devastating" and that she "treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild." The statement added: "She was the life and soul of every party. She had a wonderful personality, a big heart and a way of bringing laughter and happiness wherever she went."

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Massink, who is leading the investigation, said in a statement reported by LBC and the Evening Standard: "Our thoughts remain with Rose's family and friends, they continue to be supported by specialist officers during this difficult time." He acknowledged that the incident has "caused significant concern in the local community," noting that an increased police presence has remained in Tollington Park. He appealed for anyone with information or doorbell footage to come forward, adding, "No detail is too small."

My London reported that detectives cordoned off Tollington Park, Evershot Road and the area around St Mellitus Church overnight while a forensics team gathered evidence. It also said the arrested man was taken into custody on Friday, August 21 and remained in custody as of its report.

The Evening Standard reported that the arrest was made on suspicion of murder and aggravated burglary, and that the victim had been rushed to hospital after police were called to reports of a burglary at around 9.20pm. She died just over 24 hours later, according to the Evening Standard.

The BBC reported that Rose Smith died the day after being taken to hospital, without specifying the time of the police call. My London reported that she died in hospital on August 12, one day after the break-in at her home.
