Fire Contained After Spreading into Solar Facility
Firefighters have stopped the forward progress of a vegetation fire in Sonoma County that spread into a nearby solar facility on Sunday, according to Cal Fire. The blaze was reported near Highway 101 and San Antonio Road, outside Petaluma.
Cal Fire reported the fire grew to approximately four acres before crews brought it under control, though the Santa Rosa Press Democrat noted the wildfire burned 6.4 acres along the highway corridor. The discrepancy in acreage underscores the rapid change in the fire's footprint.
"Forward progress of the fire has been stopped," Cal Fire's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit (LNU) said in an update on X at 8:28 p.m., according to the government agency. The post added that crews would remain on scene for several hours to continue mop-up operations and strengthen established control lines.
Agencies Respond and Cooling Operations Continue
Multiple fire departments responded to the incident, including Marin County Fire, Novato Fire Protection District, Gold Ridge Fire Protection District, and Cal Fire's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit. Print dispatches from other agencies were also present, though the Press Sonoma-Democrat noted that several fire departments responded to the initial report at about 7:45 p.m.
By 8 p.m., Cal Fire had mapped the blaze at 4 acres and confirmed it had reached a solar facility in the area. It remained unclear which solar plant was impacted or if it sustained any damage. Firefighters continued to work to extinguish hot spots and reinforce containment lines throughout the evening, with crews assigned to continue monitoring the site Monday.
Possible Cause Under Investigation
Officials have not yet released an official cause. Cal Fire spokesperson Jason Clay told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat Monday that the initial report indicated a single vehicle had crashed off the side of the roadway and caught fire, but investigators had not determined a final attributed cause.
Cal Fire said earlier that investigators are expected to examine the area once suppression work is complete. The fire began as a vegetation blaze near Highway 101, a memorandum corridor through Sonoma County's North Bay, and smoke or emergency activity in the area can affect local traffic.
