A Heated Exchange at Anfield

Newly released footage from the Amazon Prime documentary 'A Beautiful Obsession' has captured a heated dressing-room exchange between Pep Guardiola and Kyle Walker following Manchester City's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in December 2024. The clash, which left Guardiola in tears, has drawn widespread attention as it offers an intimate look at the tensions that marked the club's difficult 2024/25 season.

The documentary, produced by City Studios in four parts, provides unprecedented access to Guardiola's final two seasons at the Etihad Stadium. In the clip, Guardiola is seen discussing a tactical situation in which Walker lost the ball in the build-up to Luis Diaz winning a penalty that Mohamed Salah converted. Guardiola's comment — "Kyle has to know that if you lose the ball it's a goal" — prompted an angry reaction from Walker, who was then captain.

"I react to someone," Walker replied, as quoted in reports. "If you keep saying my name in every meeting, in every fing meeting - then it will be impossible. You're going to get a reaction. For f sake! Every f*ing meeting it's my name."

Guardiola responded by suggesting that Walker's name came up because he was captain. "Maybe it's because you are our captain," he said. Walker countered, "You didn't want me to be a captain." Walker later added, "I've reacted to someone else, I've lost the ball, you somehow bring my name into it."

In front of the group, Guardiola then delivered what has been described as a heartfelt address, battling to maintain his composure. "If you take it personally Kyle, then I'm sorry," he said, as reported by multiple outlets. "After nine years together... this is my defeat." He went on: "I won't stay here for the money or just for the fact of staying. I extended my contract because I want to be with you, I want to fight in that position. I don't want you to feel like I... It's not going to change the love I have for all of you - not one second."

The exchange took place during a difficult period for City, who suffered a sixth defeat in seven games in all competitions at that point, according to one report.

Aftermath and Departures

The clash had lasting consequences. Walker featured in just seven further matches for City, three as captain, before moving to AC Milan on loan in January 2025. Guardiola confirmed at the time, saying, "Two days ago Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad at the end of his career." Walker later signed a permanent two-year deal with Burnley in the summer of 2025, ending his time at City after more than 300 appearances.

Guardiola, meanwhile, remained at City until the end of the 2025/26 season, leaving one year before his contract was due to expire. His exit was confirmed ahead of the final fixture, days after a draw with Bournemouth. He was replaced by Enzo Maresca. Guardiola's tenure brought six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and one Champions League trophy.

In a later comment, Guardiola reflected on Walker's conduct, saying, "So sad, what happened with Kyle... You cannot behave as a captain the way he has done it." The club's captaincy was subsequently given to Bernardo Silva for Guardiola's final season, with Ruben Dias now serving as skipper under Maresca.

Separate Financial Charges Case Remains Unresolved

Separately, the ongoing case regarding Manchester City's alleged financial rule breaches continues to draw attention. The club were charged with 115 breaches in February 2023, a number later increased to 130. The hearing concluded in December 2024, but no decision has yet been announced, leaving the case unresolved as the new season approaches.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters addressed the matter in an interview with Sky News, acknowledging the delay. "Our rules are very clear about that – I have to keep everything confidential until we're ready to hand down a decision," he said. "It has taken longer than expected, and I do understand the frustrations."

Masters also explained why Chelsea's case resolved more quickly, attributing it to the new owners coming forward with all relevant information, which led to a sanction agreement. Chelsea were fined £10m and given a suspended transfer ban for breaching 74 rules. In contrast, Masters noted, "the key difference is, given the evidence base and given the lack of witnesses, none of the people involved with these payments are still at the club."

If found guilty, Manchester City could face severe penalties, including the stripping of past titles or lawsuits from rival clubs, according to one report. However, no outcome has been announced, leaving the situation unresolved.
