Paul Bettany, the 55-year-old actor known for roles in WandaVision and numerous other projects, says he still gets recognized on the streets of New York City for a single scene from his early career. In the 2001 film A Knight's Tale, Bettany's character, Geoffrey Chaucer, famously walks naked through the streets after losing his clothes gambling. The actor told People magazine at the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026 earlier this month that cab drivers frequently call him out.

"I live in New York City, and I was in a film called A Knight's Tale, right at the beginning of my career, where I walked down the street naked, and so, I'll get cab drivers to this day winding down their window and going, 'You're the naked guy!'" he said. "They have me at a disadvantage."

While Bettany acknowledged that fans sometimes quote his more recent work—he cited the WandaVision line "What is grief, if not love persevering?"—the A Knight's Tale moment remains a unique kind of introduction, as ANI reported.

A Film He Can't Rewatch

A Knight's Tale also starred Heath Ledger as William Thatcher, a young man who aspires to become a knight with the help of his friends, including Chaucer. The film was a milestone in Bettany's career, but he says he has only seen it once—when it first came out—and has never returned to it.

During a public appearance at LA Comic Con in 2025, Bettany explained that fans sometimes approach him to quote dialogue, but he can't remember any of it. "It was like another lifetime ago," he said. "And people do come up sometimes, people come up to me on the street and quote things at me, and I literally can't remember. I can't remember any of it."

He added, "I saw [the film] when it first came out. I've never seen it again since. There are lots of reasons for that, and just one of them is that I miss Heath too much." Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose in 2008, at the age of 28.

Bettany has spoken warmly about his late co-star, describing their time together on A Knight's Tale. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said he feels "overwhelmed with sadness" when he thinks about Heath Ledger. "Whenever I think about him, I find myself sort of overwhelmed with sadness when I have to remember that he's dead," he said, as reported by PerthNow.

He described Ledger as "an incredibly creative force" and mourned the projects that never came to fruition. "He was an incredibly creative force and I find myself mourning the things that he didn't get to make," Bettany said.

Bettany also pushed back against a common narrative about his late friend. "He's always kind of been remembered as a kind of tortured genius, but he just wasn't like that," Bettany said, according to PerthNow. "He was shining, he was full of life and joy, he was a fantastic actor." He noted that Ledger had a sleeping problem, but said his lasting memory is of a vibrant person.
