Injury During Saturday's Game

San Diego Padres utility player Luis Rengifo will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL during Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, as reported by Newsweek. Rengifo was placed on the injured list after suffering the non-contact injury, and a cart took him off the field.

The injury occurred in the seventh inning when Rengifo caught a relay throw and began chasing Rays baserunner Taylor Walls toward third base. As Rays outfielder Cedric Mullins broke for home, Rengifo awkwardly slung the ball across his body and collapsed. Three runs scored on the play, according to the report.

Rengifo, 29, joined the Padres on a minor-league contract after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers in June. He made his San Diego debut on July 10.

Season Performance and Role

Before the injury, Rengifo had been one of the Padres' most productive hitters since joining the club. Through the end of July, he was batting .381 with the Padres, according to the report. In 38 games, Rengifo hit four home runs, drove in 17 runs merged, and posted an .784 OPS.

Rengifo, a switch-hitter, played left field in 22 of his 38 games with San Diego. According to the report, he was the only switch-hitter on the Padres' roster. He also accumulated 1.0 WAR during his time with the club, a figure that ranked above both Jake Cronenworth's 0.9 WAR and Manny Machado's 0.9 WAR over the same period.

Roster Impact and Options

The Padres will need to account for Rengifo's absence as they compete in the tight National League wild-card race, sitting 1.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks. The team also has Gavin Sheets on the injured list, while Austin Hays has been sidelined for most of the year. Among the options available to fill the roster spot are Austin Hays, Dustin Harris, Samad Taylor, and others.

The Padres were swept by the Rays in the three-game series, with Saturday's loss a 7-6 defeat.
