Knightsbridge Powers to Pacific Classic Victory

DEL MAR, Calif. — Knightsbridge dispatched a stubborn rival in the early going and powered away to win the $1 million Pacific Classic by 6 1/4 lengths on Saturday at Del Mar, earning an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31.

The 5-year-old Godolphin homebred's victory, the eighth win of a 12-race career, produced a winning payoff of $4.20 per $2 bet as the betting favourite. His earnings climbed to $1,523,155 with the $600,000 winner's share of the purse, according to the Associated Press.

Bill Mott, the Hall of Fame trainer, won his second Pacific Classic, having previously taken the 2008 edition with Go Between, and the win helped erase the memory of Cigar's famous defeat in the 1996 running at the hands of 39-1 longshot Dare and Go.

Fast Pace Creates Doubt

On a sticky, 80-degree afternoon, Knightsbridge shared a duel up front with Full Serrano, pushing through swift early fractions that worried both his jockey, Junior Alvarado, and Mott, who watched from Saratoga Springs, NY.

"I thought maybe they were going a little too fast down the backside," Mott told Del Mar publicity by phone, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Alvarado echoed those concerns: "I was a little worried we were going a little too fast."

But the worry was unwarranted. After shaking off Full Serrano at the top of the stretch, Knightsbridge pulled clear, with Original Sin finishing second and Full Sarrano holding third. The final margin was 6¼ lengths.

The official final time was a point of contention among reporters: the Associated Press clocked it at 2:01.79, while the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register recorded 2:02.28.

In the winner's circle, Alvarado praised the horse: "He was kind of skipping over the ground. I had my hopes that when I asked him he would give me his best right when we turned for home. It was all heart there. He's a horse that has that lot of talent." He also noted his earlier reserve: "About the quarter pole, I picked up my reins and smooched at him, and I felt him quicken a little bit. I knew that would be enough."

Behind the Victory

Knightsbridge shipped to Del Mar from the East Coast after a win in the Monmouth Cup five weeks earlier, a race in which he won by found the margin and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 122, reported as the year's fastest. The Pacific Classic was only the second time in his career that he navigated two turns, having spent his first 10 starts around one-turn races.

Dan Pride, Chief Operating Officer of Godolphin, offered a proud assessment. "Junior knew that the pace was going to be old strong," he said, "and he knows Knightsbridge well. He's always been talented ever since he broke his maiden at Churchill Downs three years ago. We've always loved him. There have been some stops and starts, but today he showed what kind of horse he is."

Original Sin, the mount of Juan Hernandez, staged a late rally to finish second after breaking from the gate at odds of 21-1. Fall Serrano's for the second Sank his third; his team for defeat was what his hope for a second victory in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, a race he won in 2024.

Om N Joy, the only filly in the field, finished fourth, followed by Hit Show, Malarchuk In, Forged Steel, British Isles, Navajo Warrior, Subsanador and Finger. The race drew 11 horses.

Context and Milestone

The Pacific Classic was part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, the winner gaining a spot in the $7 million Classic at Keeneland. The race has historically produced two winners who repeated in the Festival of Champions: Accelerate (2018) and Flightline (2022).

Knightsbridge's connections now face a decision between the Classic and the Dirt Mile, a choice that could depend on how he trains.

"He earned a berth in the Classic," the AP noted, "but his team has not confirmed which race he will enter at Keeneland."

Also on Saturday's card, Tam Tam won the Del Mar Prize for trainer Philip Bauer, and Alvarado also steered the winner to victory there, and King of Gosford took the Del Mar Mile, with remaining results as the Green Flash Handicapit claimed by Sorrento Sky.
