Record-Breaking Summer Window
The Premier League's summer transfer window came to a frenzied conclusion on Tuesday night, with more than half of the league's clubs breaking their transfer records, according to The Independent and LBC. The window featured four of the top flight's five most expensive ever deals, and summer spending pushed beyond last season's record of £3bn, with the final figure yet to be confirmed.
Among the headline moves, Elliot Anderson joined Manchester City for £116m and Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea for £117m, as reported by both The Independent and LBC. Liverpool spent an initial £106m, potentially rising to £123m, on Paris Saint Germain winger Bradley Barcola. Enzo Fernandez's £125m move from Chelsea to Manchester City matched the British record set 12 months ago by Alexander Isak.
The National provided a detailed list of transfers, including Sandro Tonali's £100m move from Newcastle to Tottenham, which has the potential to become a fifth £100m-plus deal this summer. Spurs broke their club record twice, with Mateus Fernandes arriving from West Ham for an initial £85m and Savio's £75m switch from Manchester City slotting in third on their all-time list.
Clubs Breaking Records
Eleven clubs in all have broken their transfer records, six of them on more than one occasion, according to The Independent. Coventry broke their record four times, signing Aurele Amenda, Loum Tchaouna, Carl Rushworth, and Caleb Yirenkyi. Three clubs broke their transfer records to sign goalkeepers, including James Trafford costing Leeds £40m.
Aston Villa and Ipswich also broke their respective records twice, while Mamadou Sangare (Brentford), Luka Vuskovic (Brighton), and Liam Delap (Nottingham Forest) were all £40m-plus club-record buys. The National's list of the 50 best deals included many of these transfers, with assessments based on current ability, potential ability, and value for money.
Key Deals and Spending
There have been nine moves worth an initial £75m or more, including Ayyoub Bouaddi's £86m move from Lille to Manchester City and Bruno Guimaraes' £60m transfer from Newcastle to Arsenal. Carlos Baleba moved from Brighton to Manchester United for £70m, and Nicolas Jackson transferred from Chelsea to Aston Villa for £65m.
Aston Villa banked £50m-plus fees for Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins, and Morgan Rogers, while Newcastle raised over £235m from the sales of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon, as reported by The Independent and LBC.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi admitted, "The transfer market is crazy," reflecting a league-wide summer of spending, as quoted by both The Independent and LBC.
The National also noted additional notable transfers, including Joao Gomes moving from Wolves to Aston Villa for £38m, and several other deals across the league. The window saw clubs scrambling to lock in their squads for the 2026/27 season.
