Employees brace for possible September 1 layoffs

Oracle employees are heading into September with renewed uncertainty over possible job cuts, as the company reportedly works to reduce payroll by September 1, the start of its fiscal second quarter. While Oracle has not officially confirmed another mass layoff for that date, reports indicate that managers have been asked to identify positions that could be eliminated, according to Mashable and The Times of India.

The anticipation is fueled by the memory of the previous restructuring on March 31, when thousands of Oracle staff in the US, India, Canada, and Mexico received termination notices around 6 am local time. The email, signed "Oracle Leadership," said the company had decided to eliminate the role as part of a broader organisational change, and that it was the employee's last working day, as reported by The Times of India.

The '6 am email' and its aftermath

The March emails carried a specific set of instructions. Employees were told that severance would follow only after they signed termination paperwork via DocuSign, using their Oracle email address—the same address they were about to lose access to. System access was revoked the same morning, with no HR call or manager conversation, according to The Times of India.

That pattern has shaped expectations for September 1. Employees now expect layoff emails to land on the morning of September 1, an expectation built on how the last round went. On Reddit's r/employeesOfOracle forum, which has run a "probable layoff" megathread through August, one employee described checking email at 6 am on the Monday after payday just to confirm he still had a job, The Times of India reported. Another noted that nothing had landed at 6 am at Oracle's India Development Center.

Financial and strategic context

Oracle's workforce has shrunk significantly in the past year. The company cut 21,000 jobs in the fiscal year ended May 31, roughly 13% of its workforce, reducing headcount from about 162,000 to 141,000, according to The Times of India, citing Oracle's annual filing. Mashable also reported a decline of roughly 21,000 employees over the same period.

The layoffs come amid a significant strategic shift toward AI and cloud infrastructure. The company continues to report strong business growth, but it is also facing financial pressure. Oracle's stock is down more than 20% this year, and shareholders sued in January over what Oracle said about borrowing for its $300 billion commitment to OpenAI, The Times of India reported. The same article cited an estimate from TD Cowen that cutting 20,000 to 30,000 roles could free up $8-10 billion in incremental free cash flow annually.

The company has not publicly confirmed any layoffs for September 1. Oracle declined to comment, according to The Times of India.
