Rescue efforts continue as flood death toll rises
Rescue efforts have entered their fifth day after flash floods devastated a border area in Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday, with Nepalese energy minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha providing updates on operations at hydroelectric facilities throughout Saturday.
The disaster has left at least 675 people dead in Nepal, with more than 2,400 still missing, according to reports from the region. In Tibet, the official death toll stands at seven, with 554 reported missing. More than 18,700 rescuers have been deployed in Nepal, supported by specialist teams from China and India.
Rescuers have drilled a hole into a cable tunnel at the Trishuli-3 'A' hydropower site, with an initial inspection revealing no debris inside, though no communication has been established with anyone within. Efforts are also continuing at the Trishuli-3 'B' facility. In his most recent update, Minister Shrestha said rescuers would work through the night, but warned that their efforts could be impacted and even suspended "for some time as water flow" remains a risk.
Cause: Glacial collapse, not earthquake
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the disaster was caused by a "glacial collapse"—when a glacier or part of a glacier disintegrates—rather than an earthquake. The collapse, which occurred on a glaciated mountain in Langtang National Park near the Nepal-Tibet border, released energy equivalent to a 2-magnitude earthquake. Reports initially described the event as a 4-magnitude earthquake, but the USGS later attributed the cause to the glacier collapse.
The impact of the collapsed glacier hitting the valley floor triggered "subsequent catastrophic impacts downstream," the agency said. Powerful floodwaters and debris travelled approximately 62 miles (100km) downstream from the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi Rivers, careering through towns popular with mountaineering tourists and pilgrims in northern Nepal, as reported by BBC News.
Risks of secondary flooding
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has warned that secondary flooding could occur in the coming days as a result of debris that washed into the river systems. The centre said it was assessing whether the Trishuli River had been temporarily blocked in narrow sections, which could risk forming a landslide dam and a second flood.
