OpenAI's ad business hits $1 billion annualized revenue run rate
OpenAI announced Monday that its advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, a milestone the company is touting as proof of its "diversified business model." The run rate indicates the business would generate $1 billion over a year if its current pace continued, not that it has already collected that amount.
The ad business, which is roughly 200 days old, builds on OpenAI's existing revenue engines, including enterprise offerings, consumer subscriptions, and usage-based application programming interfaces. The announcement comes as OpenAI is gearing up for what is expected to be a massive IPO and faces pressure to justify its $852 billion valuation to investors, as reported by CNBC.
ChatGPT Ads are now available in more than 40 countries, and OpenAI said it is rolling out self-service access across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa on Monday. The company says tens of thousands of advertisers use its platform, and small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) account for a "material share" of its ad business, according to NewsBytes. The Ads Manager tool, first launched in the US, has been instrumental in attracting SMBs to advertise on ChatGPT.
OpenAI began testing ads within its ChatGPT chatbot in the S. in February, a decision that was highly anticipated and controversial. Digital advertising has long been the cash cow for other big tech companies like Google and Meta, but OpenAI's move was ridiculed by its chief rival, Anthropic, which made OpenAI's ad push the focus of its first Super Bowl campaign, as reported by CNBC.
Ads within the chatbot appear for OpenAI's Go subscribers and its free tier, which makes up the vast majority of its 1 billion weekly active users.
Privacy and labeling assurances
OpenAI has assured users that its ads are clearly labeled and do not influence ChatGPT's answers. The company also says that advertisers do not have access to users' private conversations. "Our next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT Ads to more markets and introduce additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities," OpenAI said in a release. "We will also explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT."
Regulatory developments
On Monday, regulators designated ChatGPT Ads as a significant online search engine under the Digital Services Act, as reported by The Motley Fool.
