New Zealand has detected its first H5N1 bird flu infection in a native bird, a swamp harrier hawk, days after the country recorded its first case of the disease.
The hawk, known locally as a kahu, was found in the North Island's Wairarapa region, according to Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard. The confirmation came after New Zealand reported its first H5 bird flu case on Wednesday, when an infected brown skua — a migratory seabird — was found on Petone beach near Wellington.
"While it's disappointing to find a native bird with H5 bird flu, it's not unexpected following the confirmation earlier this week of our first case," Hoggard said. He explained that the hawk may have contracted the virus by hunting, eating, or scavenging infected birds. "This hawk can go out to the coast, especially in winter to hunt," he added.
