NVIDIA Invests $3.5 Billion in MediaTek, Expands Custom AI Chip Partnership
NVIDIA has announced a $3.5 billion investment in convertible bonds issued by MediaTek, solidifying a partnership that spans AI infrastructure, local AI computing, and software-defined automotive platforms. The deal was announced on Monday, according to reports.
Strategic Investment Details
The investment comes as part of a convertible bond offering by MediaTek, which one analysis described as nearly the whole of a record $3.9 billion offering, calling it the largest convertible MediaTek has ever brought to market. The financial instrument provides NVIDIA with both debt protection and potential equity upside, according to the same analysis.
Custom AI Chip Collaboration
Central to the partnership is MediaTek's adoption of NVIDIA's NVLink Fusion platform, a system that provides a prevalidated route for designing custom AI accelerators that integrate into NVIDIA's rack-scale systems. SiFive is also adopting the platform, according to reports.
MediaTek will position itself as a design partner for cloud service providers, frontier model developers, and hyperscalers seeking to build custom AI processors, often called XPUs. By building on NVLink Fusion, MediaTek's customers can integrate specialized processing dies into NVIDIA's MGX architectures, offering lower development complexity and faster time to market.

Expanding Across Platforms
The collaboration extends beyond data centers to include RTX Spark and DGX Spark for local AI computing. In the automotive sector, the plan combines MediaTek's automotive system-on-chip design with NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX hardware and software stack.
Market Implications
The deal addresses what some analysts describe as a key concern for NVIDIA: the trend of its largest customers designing their own custom chips. Every hyperscaler now runs a custom chip program, and each new in-house chip announcement has historically been viewed as a potential threat to NVIDIA's dominance, according to analysis.
NVLink Fusion appears designed to counter that trend by making it easier for companies to build custom chips that still connect into NVIDIA's infrastructure. One analysis characterized the investment as NVIDIA positioning itself to profit from the custom chip movement rather than be displaced by it.
MediaTek's role is particularly significant given its expertise in designing semi-custom silicon for companies that lack NVIDIA-scale engineering teams. The Taiwanese firm's chips are found in much of the world's phones, televisions, and Wi-Fi equipment, according to reports.
