Police search for mother after newborn's body found in Auburn bin
New South Wales Police are searching for the mother of a newborn baby boy whose body was discovered in a garbage bin in Auburn, in Sydney's west, on Monday morning.
Emergency services were called to Harrow Road, Auburn, at approximately 11:20am after reports that a baby's body had been found in a bin. One report, carried by PerthNow, placed the time of the response at about 11:30am. Officers from Auburn Police Area Command attended the scene and located the body of a newborn boy.
A crime scene has been established and detectives have commenced an investigation into the incident, police said.
Police appeal for mother to come forward
In a statement, NSW Police said they hold "serious concerns for the welfare of the baby's mother" and urged her to come forward.
"Officers are urging the mother to attend her nearest hospital to receive urgent care for herself," police said.
A police spokesperson told PerthNow that the woman should attend the nearest hospital to "receive urgent care for herself". The whereabouts of the mother remains unknown.
Investigators are also calling on the public to come forward with any information that could assist, including mobile phone or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the discovery. Anyone who can help is urged to contact Auburn Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Investigation ongoing
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the baby's death. They were expected to provide more information later on Monday afternoon, with The Guardian reporting that a press conference was due to be held at 4pm AEST.
Support services were also listed in connection with the appeal, including Lifeline (13 11 14) and beyondblue (1300 22 4636).
Police have not yet named any person of interest and the cause of the baby's death has not been released.
