A Surprising Career Goal

North West, the 13-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, has revealed she hopes to take on a 'regular job' at Starbucks next year. In a new cover interview with Dazed magazine, the teenager, who released her debut EP in May, said that while 'music' is what she wants to do for the rest of her life, she also aspires to experience a more conventional form of work.

"I still wanna work," she said, when asked what she would do if she weren't an artist. "I wanna work at, like, Starbucks next year. I think I can next year 'cause I'm gonna be 14, so… I think I can. I want to have a regular job, I guess."

The quote, published Monday, quickly drew attention online, with commentary on X reflecting a divided audience. Some were critical, viewing her desires as 'performative' and 'ungrateful,' while others defended her, arguing that it's normal for a teen to want to be independent and earn their own money, regardless of their parents' fame. One X user wrote, "If she didn't want to work, y'all would be calling her a spoiled rich kid. I swear the internet is full of shit."

Beyond Music and Coffee

In the same interview, North also reflected on her evolving career interests. She told Dazed that being a pro basketball player is "not" in the cards for her anymore, a shift from her earlier aspirations. In a 2023 i-D Magazine interview, she had named a range of professions she wanted to pursue, including basketball player, rapper, and, at age seven, boxer. She also mentioned wanting to walk dogs to earn money for art supplies and expressed a desire to own Yeezy and SKIMS as a business owner.

North also shared her thoughts on advice she's received, saying the worst piece was to "start my career later." She explained, "It's like, nah, this is my hobby, this is what I like to do, this is what I wanna do with my life." When asked about something she likes but is bad at, she replied, "I don't like to do things that I'm bad at."

Her description of an ideal day reflected her dedication to her craft: "I don't like to rest a lot. I like to get stuff done. So maybe just going to rehearsal, and then going to the studio; that's a perfect day. Or having a big show would be the most ideal day."

The interview also touched on personal style choices. North, who has a collection of piercings, said her famous parents won't "allow" her to pierce her bridge—a piercing that runs horizontally through the skin on the upper bridge of the nose. She noted that piercings make you your full self.

As BuzzFeed noted in its coverage, North is homeschooled, and Kim Kardashian has said she learns about business, money management, and brand-building, among other subjects. The outlet's author also reflected that, despite her fame, North is "just a 13-year-old girl" and that wanting a job at her age is entirely normal.
