Mira Rajput's Social Media Post
On August 30, Mira Rajput, who is married to Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor, shared a video on Instagram Reels. In the post, she described meeting Smriti Irani, the actor-turned-politician, on a flight. Rajput wrote in her caption: "And it was just a soup, foods that heal. Met @smritiiraniofficial on a flight, and aside from talking about coding platforms, history and everything under the sun, I remembered a recipe for a soup she shared that helped me like nothing else quite could for anaemia… dal ka soup has never been this good."
According to Rajput, the chance encounter inspired her to share the recipe because she had "struggled with anaemia my whole life." She explained that she had been anaemic for years and decided to try the soup after seeing Irani's earlier video.
The Recipe's Origins
Smriti Irani had previously shared the recipe during an interaction with Curly Tales. In that video, Irani said many women experience anaemia-related issues and should drink this soup. She listed the ingredients as drumstick, masoor dal (red lentils), onion, ginger, tomato, and spices of your choice. Irani's preparation method involves boiling a small amount of masoor dal along with chopped onion, ginger, tomato, and three to four drumsticks, then blending the mixture into a soup. She described it as "the most iron-rich soup you can have if you are a vegetarian."
Mira Rajput's Experience
Rajput said she consumed about half a cup of the soup every day for three months. She reported seeing a genuine difference in her blood reports after this period. In her video, she called the recipe "super simple" and noted it was "nothing fancy" — using ingredients found in any regular Indian kitchen. She added: "Just half a cup every day."
Rajput also explained why she chose to share the recipe publicly. "I felt this was worth sharing because so many women in India deal with this; it's not something that affects only one specific section of society – it doesn't discriminate. So if something as simple as this helped me, I feel it's worth passing on," she said.
Medical Context
Anaemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to transport oxygen effectively to tissues. According to the Cleveland Clinic, anaemia can have several causes and may range from mild to severe. Common symptoms include tiredness, weakness, and shortness of breath. Iron-deficiency anaemia is the most common type, but anaemia is not always caused by iron deficiency; there are different types of the condition.
Rajput's account is a personal anecdote and should not be taken as medical advice. Anyone with concerns about anaemia or other health conditions should consult a healthcare professional.
