The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reached a total installed solar capacity of 42.1 MWp across its zone as of July 2026, according to a statement from the railway's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, on Sunday, August 23. This milestone traces back to the inception of its solarisation initiative in 2011, as reported by ANI and Lokmat Times.
Capacity and Divisional Contributions
Between January and July 2026, NFR commissioned 23.7 MWp of new solar capacity, the highest among all Zonal Railways of Indian Railways, as both outlets reported. This brought the total installed capacity to the current figure. The largest contribution comes from Lumding Division, which includes Guwahati, with 17.7 MWp, followed by Rangiya Division at 9.6 MWp. Alipurduar (in West Bengal), Katihar (Bihar), and Tinsukia (Assam) Divisions also added to the total, with Lokmat Times naming them specifically. NFR is headquartered at Maligaon near Guwahati and operates across the Northeastern states as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of Bihar, according to that source.
Generation and Financial Impact
In the financial year 2025-26, solar power generation reached approximately 114 lakh units, yielding savings of around ₹8.6 crore. This represents a 90% increase in generation and a 95.45% rise in savings compared to 2024-25, when NFR generated about 60 lakh units with savings of roughly ₹4.4 crore. Sharma emphasized that these gains reflect NFR's sustained efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, promote clean energy, and optimise energy expenditure.
Future Expansion
NFR has 9 MWp of additional solar capacity under various stages of implementation across its divisions, with major installations planned in Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar, and Alipurduar. These additions are expected to significantly augment the zone's overall renewable energy output, reinforcing NFR's commitment to the national vision.
Net-Zero Commitment
The expansion of solar installations ties directly into Indian Railways' goal of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter. Both ANI and Lokmat Times highlighted NFR's progress in this regard, with NFR demonstrating support through the significant increase in installed capacity and generation since 2011.
