Delay Announced

The next-generation Land Rover Defender, long expected to arrive by 2028 or 2029, has been pushed back by at least two years and is now slated for the early 2030s, according to sources who spoke to The Times. The reports, carried by 7NEWS Australia and Yahoo News New Zealand, describe the delay as a response to cost-cutting measures at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and concerns about the pace of electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

Reasons Behind the Delay

The delay is attributed to a combination of internal and external pressures. JLR has reportedly been selling the postponement internally as a measure of the current model's success: the Defender sells around 110,000 units per year, nearly a third of the company's total 350,000 vehicles sold in the fiscal year ending March 2026. The true reasons, according to The Times, include cost-cutting and the slower-than-expected uptake of EVs, with uncertainty about government incentives and regulations also playing a role.

External factors add to the strain. JLR has been hurt by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, with the current Defender, built in Slovakia, subject to a 15% tariff in the US. A deal negotiated by former UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reduces the tariff to 10% for the first 100,000 cars exported from the UK to the US, most of which are other Land Rover models. The company has also faced growing competition from Chinese automakers and is still recovering from a Russian cyberattack that forced a five-week production shutdown in 2025. Last quarter, JLR delivered 79,300 vehicles, down 9% from the same period the previous year.

EV Market Context

Market data illustrates the challenges JLR faces. In the US, EVs accounted for just 5.8% of new car sales in the second quarter of 2026, according to Kelley Blue Book. In contrast, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association reports that EV sales in Europe and the UK made up 22.2% of the market in the first half of the year, making electric the second-most popular drivetrain behind hybrids, which drove 36.9% of sales.

Next-Gen Platform and Future Models

The next Defender will be built on JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), an 800-volt platform that will support both all-electric and hybrid powertrains. The pure-electric drivetrain is not possible with the current model's D7x platform, according to reports.

Despite the delay, a smaller Defender model, possibly named Defender Sport, is expected to debut next year and could launch as an EV, serving as the entry point to the Land Rover range. The company is prioritizing its electric Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and the just-announced Range Rover GT. Additionally, JLR signed a deal with Stellantis in June to jointly develop and produce a new US-specific Defender model.
