FIR Filed Against NC Leader in Ladakh Over Remarks Targeting BJP
Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a senior leader of the National Conference (NC) in connection with alleged derogatory and provocative remarks made against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), officials said on Monday. The case was filed in the Drass district of Ladakh, following a complaint by the BJP’s district president for Drass, Fayaz Ahmed Qari.
The complaint alleges that Ghulam Rasool Nagvi, the NC’s territorial vice president, made the remarks during a press conference on August 21. According to the complaint, Nagvi described the BJP as a “religion” and referred to its workers as “Yazidi qaum.” The term “Yazidi” references Yazid ibn Muawiya, the ruler historically held responsible for the killing of Imam Hussain, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at Karbala in 680 CE, and is often used to denote an oppressor.
The complaint further states that such remarks were provocative and could potentially create communal tension, disturbing public peace and law and order in the region. Along with the written complaint, the complainant submitted video clips of the press conference as supporting evidence and requested an investigation and legal action against the accused.
The FIR was registered on August 22 at Police Station Drass under Sections 196, 352, 353, and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), provisions that pertain to hate speech, public provocation, and malicious insults aimed at religion. Officials confirmed that the case has been taken up for investigation.
The development comes amid heightened political sensitivities in the region, though no further details about the investigation or any response from the accused have been made public so far.
