Josey Dorsey, the son of late "Glee" star Naya Rivera and actor Ryan Dorsey, has landed his first film role. The 10-year-old, who turns 11 on September 17, will appear alongside his father in the upcoming movie "The Burning Valley," according to his IMDb page, where he is listed as "Boy" and Ryan Dorsey as "Father."
The film
"The Burning Valley" is written and directed by Evan Coury in his feature directorial debut. It is currently filming on location in Pennsylvania's Rust Belt, northeast of Pittsburgh. In an interview with the Tribune-Review, Coury described the plot: "The movie is about a steelworker who loses his job when the mill announces a shutdown. It sets him on a journey as he wanders through his Rust Belt town." Coury also called the project a "small, poetic film about deindustrialization with an emotional truth."
Josey's acting background
This film role follows Josey's previous appearance in the theatre production "Seussical Jr." in West Virginia, where he lives with his father. Last year, Ryan Dorsey told People that Josey had already acted in a couple of plays, adding, "He hasn't had the lead part or anything, but he's so good." Dorsey also noted that Josey is "not begging" to be an actor yet, but is being exposed to various activities, including violin, piano, chess club, baseball, and soccer.
Family legacy
The news of Josey's debut comes six years after the death of Naya Rivera, who drowned accidentally on July 8, 2020, at Lake Piru in Ventura County, California. She was 33. Authorities concluded that Rivera managed to get her son back onto the boat after they entered the water, but she was unable to save herself. Her body was found on July 13, 2020, after a "search and recovery" operation. Rivera was best known for her role as Santana Lopez on the Fox musical comedy-drama "Glee."
In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Rivera's mother, Yolanda Previtire, and sister, Nickayla Rivera, described Josey as the spitting image of his mother. "His tenacity, his drive, his zeal, his adventure for life. He's just Naya in boy form," Previtire said. "He loves entertaining," Nickayla added. "He loves singing at the top of his lungs."
Ryan Dorsey has acted in TV shows including "Justified" and "Palm Royale."
