National Space Day: A milestone and a launchpad
India has been observing National Space Day on August 23 since 2023, commemorating the successful Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission, which cost around ₹600 crore. With that mission, India became the first country to reach the lunar south pole and the fourth nation to achieve a soft landing on the Moon, after the US, USSR/Russia, and China.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in 2023: "On August 23rd, India hoisted the flag on the Moon. From now onwards, that day will be known as National Space Day in India." He also named the Vikram lander's touchdown point 'Shiv Shakti' Point and the Chandrayaan-2 lunar landing point 'Tiranga' Point.
The 2023 achievement has propelled India into new space endeavors. NASA formally invited India to participate in its effort to build a permanent base near the Moon's south pole. The US embassy said in a statement on August 11: "NASA invited ISRO to join its Moon Base program, building on the two countries' partnership under the Artemis Accords." NASA posted on X: "Building on our successful collaboration in science, NASA reaffirmed its interest in @ISRO joining Moon Base. We're going back to the moon to stay — and we're bringing our partners with us."
Beyond the Moon: Sun, Mars, and more
India's space ambitions extend well beyond the Moon. Aditya L1, the country's first dedicated solar mission, studies the Sun from about 1.5 million km from Earth and has shared more than 27 TB of solar data.
In 2014, Mangalyaan entered Mars orbit on India's first attempt, making India the first nation to reach Mars on its first mission and the fourth space agency to place a spacecraft in Mars orbit. The government noted: "The mission cost ₹450 crore, showcasing how innovation and smart engineering can make ambitious space missions possible."
The SpaDeX mission successfully demonstrated autonomous docking and undocking in space, making India the fourth country to achieve space docking technology. It also demonstrated power transfer between spacecraft and tested a robotic arm in orbit.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, an Indian Air Force astronaut, travelled to the International Space Station in 2025 as part of NASA's Axiom 4 mission. His journey marked India's return to space 41 years after cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma's 1984 mission, the first for an Indian aboard a Russian Soyuz. Shukla conducted seven ISRO-designed experiments studying microgravity's effects on humans, plants, and materials.
In the private sector, Skyroot Aerospace Pvt became the first Indian private company to launch a rocket to Earth's lower orbit. Pawan Goenka, chairman of IN-SPACe, said: "I am privileged to formally announce that the first-ever Indian private sector launch has been successfully completed." Lt General AK Bhat (Retd), Director General of ISpA, told ANI: "The successful maiden launch of Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket firmly established that Indian private companies are now capable of undertaking complex orbital launches." Bloomberg reported that Vikram-1's success will likely spur India's space ambitions by bolstering satellite launch capacity, a critical requirement if billionaire Mukesh Ambani pursues a satellite constellation to rival Starlink in India.
Vision 2047 and the road ahead
India's Space Vision 2047 outlines ambitious targets: the first module of Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) by 2028, full BAS by 2035, and an Indian Moon landing by 2040. The plan also includes Chandrayaan-4 to bring back lunar samples, Chandrayaan-5 targeting in-situ study of lunar polar volatiles, and a Venus Orbiter Mission (VOM) to study the Venusian atmosphere, ionosphere, surface, subsurface, and its interaction with the Sun.
ISRO said Gaganyaan follow-on missions and the BAS first module are targeted for 2028, the Next Generation Launch Vehicle by 2032, Chandrayaan-4 by 2027, the Venus Orbiter Mission by 2028, and development of a Third Launch Pad at Sriharikota. Gaganyaan aims to send a three-person crew to a 400-km low Earth orbit for up to seven days and bring them back safely. PM Modi has also called on scientists to work on missions to Venus and Mars.
Shukla: Bright but challenging future
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of National Space Day celebrations organized by the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla said the future of India's space sector is "very bright" but challenging. He stressed that achieving the country's space ambitions will require sustained hard work, time, and resources.
"I am here for the National Space Day celebrations organised by the Space Applications Centre. We began celebrating this day following August 23, 2023, when ISRO successfully landed the Chandrayaan-3 mission on the Moon's south pole. That was a momentous day for us, and we celebrate this occasion as National Space Day to commemorate it," Shukla said.
The celebrations included children's rocket competitions and rover challenges, along with presentations showcasing collaboration between the private and public sectors in the space domain. Shukla added: "Children who took part in rocket competitions and rover challenges were present, along with many others eager to hear about the proceedings and the information being shared. Today's Space Day celebration also featured presentations showcasing the collaboration between the private and public sectors in the space domain... I feel the future is very bright, yet also very challenging; it won't happen on its own. It demands hard work, time, and resources--only then will these dreams become reality."
