NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Captures Crater from SpaceX Falcon 9 Impact

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has captured images of the impact crater left by a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage that crashed into the moon on Aug. 5, as reported by both NBC News and Space. The crash, which occurred near Einstein Crater at an estimated speed of 5,400 mph, created a crater roughly 60 feet (18 meters) wide and appears to be less than 10 feet (3 meters) deep, according to LROC Principal Investigator Mark Robinson, who is based at Intuitive Machines in Houston.

The images, taken on Aug. 11 and Aug. 12, show before-and-after views of a bright divot in the moon's terrain, with each image covering an area about 1,000 feet wide. The impact site was first identified by researchers who tracked the rocket's trajectory, pinpointing the expected location along the western edge of the moon's sunlit side.

The Falcon 9 upper stage, which weighed roughly 10,800 pounds, had launched two robotic landers to the moon in January 2025: Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience. While Blue Ghost successfully landed on the lunar surface, Resilience crashed during its attempt, as noted by Space. After its deployment, the upper stage remained adrift in orbit for over a year and a half before colliding with the moon.

The LRO, which circles the moon from pole to pole every two hours, required six days to fly over the crash site, NBC News reported. Engineers tilted the spacecraft so its cameras could point toward the crater as it passed about 60 miles (97 km) above the lunar surface, moving at about 1 mile per second. Space added that LRO's high-resolution camera system, LROC, captured images from a variety of angles, snapping every 117 minutes.

Analysis of the images reveals the crater's dimensions, with scientists determining the depth based on the length of its shadow. The photos also show bright and dark streaks emanating from the crater. According to NASA officials, the darker streaks are made of surface dust and rocks that were kicked up from a depth of about 1.5 feet, altered over time by solar wind and micrometeorite impacts. The brighter streaks near the crater rim were formed by fresher material excavated from deeper underground, as quoted in a NASA statement on Aug. 18.

Robinson noted that the V-shaped ejecta pattern on the south side of the crater is consistent with natural impactors hitting the moon at low angles. He also mentioned that the sixth image in LROC's sequence was acquired with the largest slew angle (68 degrees), presenting a view similar to what an Artemis astronaut would see from an Orion spacecraft window.

Shortly after the crash, a telescope in Chile spotted a debris plume from the collision, NBC News reported. Additionally, the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, also known as Danuri, imaged the site earlier using its Lunar Terrain Imager and sent updated crater coordinates to the LRO team to refine their follow-up imaging sequence, according to Space.

The Falcon 9 crash is only the second known case of a rocket unintentionally hitting the lunar surface, as reported by NBC News. In 2022, what was believed to be the upper stage of a Chinese rocket smacked into the far side of the moon, creating a double crater; China has denied involvement in that incident.

The event has sparked fresh debates about sustainability in space, particularly as countries like the U.S. and China race to establish a presence on the moon, NBC News reported. In a statement on Aug. 5, SpaceX said, "We actively work to be as responsible as possible with hardware left in space to ensure space safety, including for more complex missions. In this case, over time, solar activity and gravity led the second stage toward the Moon. Impacts like this are rare, but they can happen with objects in these types of orbits, and we worked with NASA on the optimal disposal solution."
