Launch and early mission

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on Sunday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, beginning a mission to investigate dark matter, dark energy, and the evolution of the universe. The observatory lifted off at 7:26 am EDT, as reported by both com and Innovation News Network, and is now on a three-month journey to its operating position around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), roughly one million miles from Earth.

According to Innovation News Network, NASA began receiving telemetry from the telescope seven minutes after launch, and the observatory separated from the Falcon Heavy 31 minutes into the flight. Roman successfully deployed its solar panels and lower instrument sun shade. Initial communications were handled through NASA's Near Space Network before responsibility shifted to the Deep Space Network. Controllers will next deploy the high-gain antenna and aperture cover, perform a trajectory correction, and activate the Coronagraph Instrument. NASA expects Roman's first images in 2027.

com reported that the telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, the pioneering US astronomer known as the "Mother of Hubble." Developed over more than a decade at a cost topping $4 billion, the observatory stands more than 12 metres tall. US President Donald Trump phoned into NASA's post-launch press conference and called the launch part of "the golden age of America."

A new atlas of the universe

Roman's primary instrument is a 300-megapixel infrared camera built from 18 detectors, housed in the Wide Field Instrument. The telescope's field of view is more than 100 times larger than Hubble's and significantly wider than James Webb's, allowing it to survey vast swathes of the sky at a rate roughly 1,000 times faster than Hubble, according to Innovation News Network. com reported that Roman will orbit 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, taking about 100 days to reach its destination.

"It will be the biggest catalogue of astronomical objects anybody's ever produced, and it will help us understand how common are solar systems like our own," said Dave Content, Roman's technical manager, as quoted by com. The mission aims to discover thousands of exoplanets and tens of thousands of supernovae, the explosive deaths of massive stars, and is designed to work in tandem with observatories such as Webb, which offers greater power and precision.

Investigating the dark universe

Dark matter and dark energy are believed to make up about 95% of the universe, yet their origins remain unknown. Dark matter cannot be observed directly because it does not emit, absorb, or reflect light. Roman is designed to study these phenomena by surveying enormous areas of the sky while looking deep into the history of the cosmos, as Innovation News Network reported.

The mission will complement other efforts to map the universe, including the Rubin Observatory and ESA's Euclid probe, according to com. Julie McEnery, a senior project scientist, is among the scientists involved in the mission.

NASA leadership response

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman hailed the programme as a success, saying, "Roman is exactly the kind of success story we want to see across NASA. Delivered ahead of schedule and on budget, this mission reflects more than a decade of dedication from the NASA workforce and our industry partners." He added, "Now, Roman will give us a new atlas of the Universe, push the boundaries of discovery, and demonstrate what is possible when America's space program pairs bold ambition with disciplined execution," as quoted by Innovation News Network.

Isaacman had earlier described the mission's promise in April, saying, "Roman will give the Earth a new atlas of the universe," according to com.
