Launch and trajectory
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Aug. 30 at 7:26 m. EDT, riding a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket into space. The heavy-lift vehicle, composed of three Falcon 9 boosters strapped together, carried the observatory for about 31 minutes before the spacecraft separated and set course for the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, known as L2, where it will orbit the Sun in sync with Earth.
The telescope, valued at $4.3 billion, will spend three months in transit before settling into its operational orbit roughly 1.6 million kilometers from Earth. Following arrival, a commissioning period will precede the start of scientific observations.
Mission goals and instruments
Roman is designed to probe some of the most fundamental questions in cosmology: the nature of dark energy and dark matter, the discovery of exoplanets, the mapping of billions of galaxies, and the study of black holes. It carries a 2.4-meter primary mirror and two scientific instruments: the Wide Field Instrument, which will capture images across a field of view at least 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, and an experimental coronagraph designed to block starlight, enabling direct imaging of exoplanets.
NASA intends the observatory to operate for at least a decade, with three major surveys planned for its first five years. The first will detect tens of thousands of distant supernovae, far exceeding the roughly 2,000 currently known. A second survey will observe more than one billion galaxies, and measurements of gravitational lensing will help astronomers map the distribution of dark matter. A third survey will scan the center of the Milky Way for gravitational microlensing events, which could reveal more than 2,000 otherwise invisible exoplanets.
Nicola Fox, associate director for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said: "Roman will be a discovery machine that will bring us closer than ever before to answering humanity's most profound questions about our cosmic history."
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman greeted the successful launch with a message posted to X: "Roman is on her way. Years of work, extraordinary engineering, and one incredible launch. Congratulations to the entire NASA team and our partners who made this mission possible. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is about to open an entirely new window into our universe."
Background and development
The observatory was originally conceived as the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) in the 2010 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey, which identified it as a top priority for the field. In 2012, the National Reconnaissance Office donated a pair of 2.4-meter mirrors originally built for spy satellites; NASA set one aside for the mission, though the project was not formally approved until 2016. The telescope was later renamed in 2020 in honor of Nancy Grace Roman (1925–2018), NASA's first chief astronomer, often called "the mother of the Hubble Space Telescope."
The project faced funding challenges during the first Trump administration, which proposed canceling it in three consecutive budgets on grounds of rising costs. Congress overruled each proposal and capped development costs at $3.2 billion. The mission ultimately launched with a total cost of $4.3 billion.
Roman will complement, rather than replace, the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. According to NASA, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and citizen science efforts will be used to help analyze the vast data streams the observatory is expected to generate.
