Arrest in Tucson Police Recruit's Killing

Alex James Barnett, 33, a suspect in the August killing of Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, was arrested Monday following a three-hour standoff with SWAT officers, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said. Authorities said they were tipped off to Barnett's location at an apartment complex near East Broadway Boulevard and South Camino Seco around 6 p.m., according to Fox News. No one else was hurt during the standoff.

Ramirez, 23, was shot and killed at his home west of Tucson, and his fiancée, a Pima County corrections officer, was hospitalized in stable condition, Fox News reported. Barnett, who faces first-degree murder charges, had been the subject of a statewide Blue Alert. The Arizona Department of Public Safety issued the alert Thursday night, August 20, 2026, as reported by The Economic Times.

Authorities had released surveillance footage showing three suspects, including Barnett, ahead of the shooting. A second suspect, Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, was arrested Saturday morning at a hotel near the Tucson International Airport. Barnett has prior burglary and weapons convictions and has gone by the name Alex Wilson, according to court records cited by Fox News. He pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment in December 2024. Sheriff Chris Nanos previously said the suspects wore all black and ski masks during the attack. Doorbell footage captured an unidentified male in a ski mask and backpack tampering with the camera, and his physical description--nearly 5 feet 10 inches, average build--was released by the FBI. Barnett's publicly available details match that description, prompting speculation that he could be the 'Porch Guy', according to The News International.

The sheriffs have not issued an update linking the two cases, as The Economic Times noted. The 'Porch Guy' remains unidentified as Guthrie's case approaches its seventh month.

The pacemaker app for Guthrie's pacemaker lost connectivity with her phone about 30 minutes after the footage, as stated in The Economic Times.
