Players share excitement ahead of Sher-e-Punjab T20 League
As the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League approaches, two of Amritsar Soormas' key players have expressed their enthusiasm for the tournament. Naman Dhir, an all-rounder, and spinner Mayank Markande have both spoken about the significance of representing the franchise and the league's broader impact on Punjab cricket.
Dhir on representing Amritsar
Dhir said he is excited to be part of a tournament that brings together Punjab's finest cricketing talent and celebrates the state's rich cricketing identity. He is particularly enthused by the opportunity to join a squad featuring India batter Abhishek Sharma and spinner Mayank Markande.
The sheer energy and ambition around this squad excited him, he said, adding that being bought by Amritsar Soormas and joining forces with players like Sharma and Markande is a fantastic opportunity.
"It is a fresh setup with an aggressive mindset, and playing in a tournament designed to showcase the very best of Punjab cricket makes it incredibly thrilling," Dhir said.
Representing Amritsar carries added significance for Dhir, given the city's sporting legacy and passionate following.
"Amritsar carries a massive sporting legacy and an unmatched passion for the game. Wearing the Amritsar colours in a tournament dedicated to Punjab's cricketing identity adds a real sense of pride. You aren't just playing for points; you are representing a community known for its fighting spirit," he said.
The Soormas will also look to draw energy from the passionate Punjab cricket fans, with Dhir relishing the prospect of playing in front of a strong home-state crowd in Mohali.
"The atmosphere in Punjab is electric. Our fans are loud, passionate, and deeply knowledgeable about cricket. Having that home support behind us in Mohali provides an extra burst of adrenaline," he said.
Dhir also sees the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League as an important platform for young cricketers to develop and prepare for the demands of franchise cricket.
"It bridges the gap between state-level cricket and high-pressure franchise tournaments," he said, adding that playing under floodlights and in a competitive environment helps players adapt.
He said he wants to play fearless, aggressive cricket with 100 percent commitment for Amritsar Soormas.
Markande on the league's role
Markande said it is a privilege to be part of Amritsar Soormas and contribute directly to Punjab's premier T20 tournament. Having come through Punjab's domestic system, he said playing in a league that unites the finest talent across the state while representing a historic city like Amritsar is deeply satisfying.
Markande believes the league can play a significant role in strengthening the state's cricketing ecosystem. He said the league provides a crucial platform for players from across Punjab, particularly those emerging from the district and age-group systems.
"Punjab has always produced match-winners, but a structured league format creates depth. It gives domestic performers, U-19 prospects, and district cricketers a regular spotlight, ensuring that talent from non-metro pockets gets scouted and fast-tracked into state and IPL teams," he said.
The spinner also has high expectations from the Soormas, highlighting the squad's balance and ability to adapt to different match situations. He called the squad well-rounded and capable of adapting to different pitch conditions and match situations.
"If we execute our bowling plans during critical phases and stay proactive in our run-chases, we are well positioned to make a serious run for the trophy," Markande said.
As one of the senior players in the squad, Markande also sees an important role for himself in helping the younger spinners navigate the demands of T20 cricket. He wants to share insights on field placements, variations, and reading pitch behaviour.
"On the field, my job is to control the middle overs, apply pressure through dot balls, and break partnerships. Off the field, I want to be approachable—sharing insights on field placements, variations, and reading pitch behaviour with the younger spinners so they feel fully supported," he said.
With the league also serving as an important preparation platform ahead of the domestic season, Markande said competitive T20 matches offer the best match practice. He also praised Abhishek Sharma, saying the batter brings immense destructive power at the top of the order.
Both Dhir and Markande are part of an Amritsar Soormas squad that also includes Abhishek Sharma, as the franchise builds a mix of experienced players and emerging talent for the tournament.
