Andrew Garfield's Confession

Andrew Garfield has revealed that he maintains a secret Instagram account, admitting in an interview with Variety that he is 'addicted' to the platform. The 43-year-old actor, who does not have a public-facing social media presence, acknowledged that his private account is one he struggles to stay off.

'I'm as addicted as anybody. My screen time notifications are horrific to me. It's like, I've given all of those hours to nothing,' Garfield told Variety.

He went on to express frustration about the lack of control he feels over his impulses, attributing it to deliberate design. 'It's genuinely enraging because we don't have as much control over these impulses as we should, and it's been by design. It's pretty dark when you look at it,' he said.

Garfield shared that his Instagram browsing includes 'weird ceramics' and 'lots of Japanese kind of craftspeople.'

The actor also discussed the possibility of a phone detox, saying, 'I think we've all had the impulse to smash our phones or throw it into the forest or throw it into the sea because we know it's taking our lives from us in some way.' He noted advice he had received about leaving his phone in another room, adding, 'As soon as it's in the room, you're kind of f*ed.'

Career Reflections and Personal Life

In the same interview, Garfield touched on his career and his thoughts about stepping away from acting. Asked if he had ever considered leaving his career behind, he replied, 'All the time.'

'I've worked a lot this year. I've done like 11 months, 12 months, straight back-to-back projects. I want people to see those projects, so I'm gonna have to tell people about them. I get that. But if I had my druthers, people would just see them, and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing,' he said.

Garfield also opened up about his temperament and his approach to new working relationships. He told People that he initially felt 'really scared' about working with Florence Pugh, his co-star in the 2024 film 'We Live in Time.'

'I was really scared. I think we were both really scared and nervous because it takes a while to get to know someone. There's layers there. There's defences there,' he said.

He described himself as 'quite shy and quite protective,' explaining that it takes him time to feel comfortable around new people: 'I am someone, who on first meeting someone, I can be quite shy and quite protective and it takes me a while to really let someone know me. But then, when they're in, there's no getting out.'

Garfield, who is dating actress Monica Barbaro, rose to prominence with his breakout role in the 2007 TV film 'Boy A,' followed by 'The Social Network' and 'Never Let Me Go' in 2010.
